Audio Crackle on Keyboard Open

Brief audio crackling occurs in the Djay app whenever the on-screen keyboard is opened. This happens in various scenarios where the keyboard is invoked, including:

  • Searching for a track
  • Adding a label to a cue point
  • Any other instance where the keyboard appears

This audio artifact disrupts the audio output and significantly impacts live performance workflows, as it prevents seamless track searching and cue point management during a set.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the Djay app.
  2. Start playing a track.
  3. Open the on-screen keyboard (e.g., by tapping the search bar or attempting to edit a cue point label).
  4. Observe a brief audio crackle at the moment the keyboard appears.

Expected Result:

Opening the on-screen keyboard should not introduce any audible artifacts or disruptions to the audio output.

Actual Result:

A brief audio crackling sound occurs each time the on-screen keyboard is opened.

Hi @oivivio, sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue. Thanks for the details about the issue and your setup - this is very helpful. Can you please confirm if Bluetooth is enabled? If so, can you test again with it off? Thanks!

Hi! Bluetooth was on. I tested again with Bluetooth off, but the issue still persists.

Okay, thanks for checking. Can you please try to capture a short video of the issue and upload it here so I can troubleshoot this further? Thanks!

Here you go! The audio briefly drops out in this example when the keyboard is activated.

Thanks for the video @oivivio. I’m unable to replicate this on my device.

  1. Are you running any other applications in the background?
  2. What is the source of your music (local music, streaming service)?
  3. If local music, what file type and where are the songs store (internal drive, external drive, iCloud)?

Hi!

  1. No other application is running in the background
  2. Local music
  3. mp3 file type. Songs are stored locally on my phone.

Okay, well let’s try this. Please close djay and follow the procedure below to perform a Forced Restart of your iPhone: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support (CA)

Confirming I performed the following actions, but the issue still persists:

  1. Deleted and reinstalled the app.
  2. Force restarted my phone.

Hmmm… very unusual. Since I cannot replicate this myself and we’ve tried all my usual remedies, I’m going to have forwarded this to the engineering team to see if they can reproduce the issue and offer any suggestions. I’ll report back here when I have news. Thanks!

Ok thank you very much!

You’re welcome @oivivio. Sorry I couldn’t solve it straight away for you. In the meantime, do you have another iOS device that you could test this on?

I also get this behavior

  • Device model: iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (3rd generation)
  • Version of operating system: iPadOS 18.3.2
  • Version of djay: 5.3 (it’s happened in all versions since I started w Djay ~6mo ago)
  • Hardware/controllers used: with or without Xone K2
  • No bluetooth or wifi - all network connections off

This will generally happen only the first time I use the on-screen keyboard. So if I remember, I’ll open the keyboard before i go on-air (radio).

Thanks for sharing @madtho. This is very helpful. If you could capture a short video of this, that would be great. Thanks!
