Im opening this topic as a general issue i notice in Djay Pro for ios.
When changing the tempo even 2% I get a noticeable change in audio quality. Please do not ask for my setup etc. This issue is an issue of the algorithm you are using for tempo adjustment and is noticeable to the well trained ears. Has been like this for years. Has been like this using different audio interfaces.
Compared to Traktor or serato the tempo adjustment makes the track awful in my opinion.
I guess it is because stems are always running and need to keep up with tempo adjustments but still it is not acceptable.
Please give us an option in ios to deactivate stems and have better quality in tempo adjustments with the master key on.
Or make the thing better with stems enabled.
This is a very good software but it lacks the most important, audio quality
Thanks for the feedback @GP_NS. I’ll share it with our dev team.
Since you are comparing this with Traktor and Serato, do you notice this same issue when using djay on macOS or Windows? It would be great to know if it’s isolated to iOS. Thanks!
I use usb sticks in compatible pioneer gear I find in the venue.
But ive used traktor for decades and the audio was never distorting that much.
I dont have the time to use djay in pc nor do I need to. As I described all i need is just 1 usb stick and my headphones to Dj. I just wanted for change to start using my iPad.
Please tell me @Slak_Jaw , what is the name of the algorithm used for the tempo adjustment? What is the version etc?
Thanks for confirming @GP_NS. So we are not exactly comparing apples to apples here then. No problem. I will share this with our dev team as well. Hardware performance and operating systems definitely play an important part in the audio quality equation.
I do not know the name of the algorithm or the version used for tempo adjustment. If that is important information for you, I can do additional research and confirm if this is public info that I’m allowed to share.
I need to confirm that my ears are OK and an inferior form of tempo adjustment is used.
Another thing I noticed is that playing tracks from the device apple local library that I have synced sounds better than playing the exact same file from “my files” of the device.
Why is this happening? Please let me know the technical issue behind the processing of both files.
Im asking you for technical data because I need to see if these issues are to be resolved soon or if they are just limitations due to the way the app is built so I can look for another option.
I havent found anything particularly concerning with the sound quality, id say its possibly not quite as good as Serato but certainly not bad enough to be an issue. This is running both software through a Reloop Flux into a Mastersounds Radius 4 and then into a Mackie 8” sub and pair of Focal Shape 50 monitors.
What i will say though, there is a noticeable different in audio quality between the FLux and my older Rane sound card, the Rane is much nicer and i think there is a general trend in digital world where the quality has dropped off, outside of high end DJ mixers. Cheap DJ controllers sound terrible (Numark mixtrack pro FX in my case) and should only be used casually at home in my opinion.
But as far as software goes its pretty much the same across the board.
If you’re using Apple Music and you’ve imported your songs, it’s possible that your file has been updated to match Apple’s version of the track. That might make it sound a bit different.
Thanks for clarifying @GP_NS. If you used iTunes Match / Apple Music when syncing your music library to your iOS device, it likely pulled a high-quality version of the same song from the iTunes/Apple Music Store.
