Would you mind elaborating whether we can expect Ableton link on the Mac app? And also if you plan on switching over to a subscription model for the mac app as well (which I would not be a fan of, btw)
and here we go, the battle is on with the new Serato Version:
“Added streaming support for SoundCloud Go+
Added streaming support for TIDAL”
How much free space is needed?
Steve, Cire:
I also gave the new Djay update a more in depth try after the initial outrage. Unfortunately not with great results.
I am not a Beta tester for algoriddim (used to be for 15 years for Logic/Apple a.o. though) and I don’t have the time to write all the issues that I have found so far here these days. But the following things should highlight and illustrate the issues that me and quite a few people are having with the current update:
- Type/Lack of communication: while I understand that companies have to keep their future plans secret it is important to keep the active user base connected and confident. The app is not the valuable element in this, it is the TIME that WE invest in curating hundreds of hours of work into our individual playlists, libraries, cue points, naming loops, tagging etc. This is worth a LOT of money. Which the companies know. Which is also why however loud we proclaim ‘THAT’s IT, I MOVING ON TO ANOTHER APP’ it actually won’t happen that quickly because we are heavily INVESTED with our time. Not the friggin sale or subscription price.
Algoriddim’s customer department would do well communicating properly as to what to expect and when and which priorities will be given. The current release does not instill any confidence in that regard for the following reasons:
Substituting elements that had not been properly addressed in the past with new ‘features’:
What comes to mind is
-
syncing across devices (still does not work no matter how hard you try. It is erratic (sometimes it works, with cue points for example, but playlists and history simply does never transfer) or simply not properly implemented.
-
Sluggishness, freezing up during playback anywhere from 10 to 1 hour into sets/performances (NEVER had a single of those in SERATO, btw. How come? Something tells me it has to do with the spotify streaming element, I see the app checking in with spotify web addresses all the time in the background even when not playing back spotify tracks, is that crucial to the way it works? Something worth looking into?)
-
UI mess. What good is a best app of the year award by Apple if the reality looks like this:
please, everyone, be honest, step a foot away and look at it again?
I mix with a combination of a custom mapped Reloop Terminal Mix 4, a mixtour and a 61 key Midi controller with beat pads. Yes, I mainly stay on these devices with my eyes yet still, for orientation and feedback purposes I also have to look at the screen:
-
The amount of times I have confused the volume faders with the tempo ones is ridiculous. The FX section, the loop section, everything is just thrown seemingly aimlessly at the screen. Use COLORS for crying out loud. yes, make them sutble hues, No one enjoys the screen screaming at you in candy colors but C’MON people, simple GUI design!
-
And what’s with the unfinished waveform display in ALL of the four tracks to the left of the playhead??!?! Irregularities like this make this program highly suspectible and not trustworthy. THAT is why we are whining and making a sound.
-
one of the most important functions for creative mixing/scratching, the SLIP function is hidden and has no visual feedback element on the screen. How dare you?!?! lol
The pressure of creating incentives for potential new customers - I get it. But you are losing customers in the mid term and long run left and right as it stands. This app has such a great potential. Why not take it there?
A clearly disappointed customer, that started out being super excited about having come across this app. Please let’s try getting all excited for it again.
PS: to be honest, the structure and moderation of this forum is almost the equivalent to the way I perceive Djay Pro at this point: it has potential, but it’s messy af, I NEVER find things that are relevant due to the way it is set up. How many times can someone really go through hundreds of messages and topics that go: "Hey do you support controller XYZ!!!’ good lord, start moderating and creating subtopics already… I don’t know where you guys are located, but I am in Hamburg and Berlin for a few months during this winter and would be happy to have a conversation with you about all of this.
Steve, the iPhone version lacks the horizontal view, btw, which is painfully missed.
the old DJ pro screenshots, vertical waveforms and cuepoints beautifully visbile in both horizontal and vertical display:
and here is the ‘new & improved’ version:
(good luck finding and hitting the ‘Match Key’ buttons, without accidentally hitting the load new track button, btw :-))
Who needs these fat & wide waveforms that manage to barely display TWO bars of the track?!?!?!?! Sacrificing screen estate for these? for what? What were you guys smoking when you decided to that? Where’s the product engineer, agreeing on that?!??!
There you have it. Obvious. I apologize for the harsh tone but music is about passion and any performer puts his ass and reputation on the line when they perform of 50 or a thousand and more people. And struggling and being let down by your main tool in that regard IS upsetting.
You can also do everyone a favor and simply state: we aim mainly at the gadget/mobile market and have no interest in the professional market and surrender to the bigger and more established rivals there. But if that’s the case please let us know so that we know where and how to invest our time (and therefor $$$)…
And you know why the rankings went down? Because they are now getting reviews from exactly the clientele that they were targeting, the gadget instant gratification kids, whose main complaint on there is: ‘Why doesn’t it play Apple Music for free?’ and ‘I thought this was a video app!!!’ lol
Hi, very nice update. It seems however that MIDI is only allowed with a subscription. Does it means owners of official Djay supported controllers like the Reloop Mixon 4 will have to pay for a subscription in order to keep using them?
I’ve read that somewhere but the option won’t appear to me
I can do that, but that completely destroys the resale value of my controller. Any person who buys that from me won’t be able to use the app it was designed for without getting into subscription.
Yes, there are alternatives (it is natively supported by Serato DJ Pro with no extra cost), but this controller is fully designed with Djay in mind, I would never recommended it for any other software.
At least they could do like Serato and keep supporting these under the free option, or choose a one time upgrade fee.
And if there are users who bought it this year? At least present an alternative. I understand App Store sucks a lot in that regard, but there are options.
Thanks a lot Anders, that’s excellent news!
I’ve managed to screw it up by installing it first on my iPhone, which is a recent device where I did not had any other Djay app installed, and activated the free trial. When I opened it up on the iPad (where I do have the previous apps) I might have restored the purchase, and this is why no option was showing for me. The solution was to cancel the trial subscription and reinstall the app.
I went to the store, bought a lightning to USB cable (45 euros) connected my ipad to my pioneer ddj1000 and… no sound. I can control the app with my controller, but the sound is playing through my ipad and not over the mixer.
Where can I choose which audio device will be used? How can I use the cue buttons on my pioneer controller?
No support for older ipads? Come on i have already bought enough equipment to use for your app. I am not prepares to put more money into a new ipad just to use your newest app.
I saw the subscription so I do not even try the new djay.
Congratulations for the new version but I have some questions about old features that I can’t see in this release:
-
I saw inside the spotify browser that the vertical green line when you have already previously loaded the song in the djay is gone. This is bad for me because I used to be check this to know when some music in a playlist I would have to insert cues, first beat yet… Do you have plans to come back this again? If not I will have to take the old version to prepare my new songs.
-
Another problem is that there is no option to see the cues and the waveforms together in the same layout. This is something substancial to prepare the songs in iphone version.
Four weeks without a repply. So here my questiona again: - I have some questions about old features that I can’t see in this release:

Insert out point on djay ios. Today we can make this only on djay pro for mac os.
-
Automix function follow the in and out mix point as in the old version.

Thanks LaidbackFred. I will do this.
Hi Djay community,
the new Djay iOS is not perfect but good, congrats to the team.
But the app can be so much more, specially for the iPhone version.
Please, PLEASE, add the saved loops to the iPhone version and a view with waveform and cue points or saved loops !
Moreover, congrats for the new sound quality of the filters and for the post fader effect.
Regards.
Hi Djay team,
after many hours on the new Djay iOS, I found 2 important problems.
Firstly, there is a crucial bug on the Echo FX. Half a time, the echo is not sync to the tempo of the track ! You have to change the FX and return to the Echo for resetting the problem.
Secondly, we miss a crucial thing. The output volume of the samples ! We need to be able to choose the volume of for instance the Air Horn.
Regards.
