Maintenance of the DJay Pro software?

Hello, i became a big fan of the DJay Pro software, mainly because of it’s flexible beat grids and “streamlined” approach. My background is NI Traktor (and before that Final Scratch).

To be honest, lately I’m getting a little worried about the direction Algoriddim is going with it’s releases and updates of the DJay Pro software. I’m even getting a littlebit of Native Instruments (NI) vibes, and we all know where that ended up.

One example: I see a lot of regular updates coming through, which I applaud, but it seems that most updates are to support integration with another new hardware device. Which of course is a good thing.

BUT…but… It seems simple and small, but very important “Quality of Life” (QoL) feature-requests are totally ignored. And at some point these add up, and become frustrations. Meanwhile competitors are catching up with their flexible grids and realtime stem support, and these also support all the hardware devices.

So what will make DJay Pro stand out of the crowd in 6-12 months time?

I believe it’s these UX and QoL features, and the fact that DJay Pro can become the “one platform for creative multiplatform DJ’ing, library management, and 2-way synchronisation”.

One very specific example: people have been requesting adding -3dB headroom to the headroom settings for quiet a while. Now it’s either 0 or -6dB, which is way to course. As a sw developer I know this cannot be a big thing to implement, yes it needs to be tested and checks all the Q&A boxes, but still it’s a tiny thing to add, and a big thing for users to have.

But it’s not added, and it seems to be marked “not important”. Which I find dissapointing. I believe a modern foward-thinking company like Algoriddim should not only focus on supporting new platforms, and adding revolutionary new features, but also keep a close eye on quality-of-life and UX improvementsl, these are equally (if not more) important.

Another example is the current implementation of filtering inside a list of tracks, it’s simply unusable tbh. It requires a lot of unnessary clicks and actions just to be able to filter on a certain bpm or key. Traktor had this solved very elegantly for years already. Especially for “openformat” DJ’s, where the flexible beatgrids and realtime stems of DJay Pro really shine, this is crucial for a streamlined and smooth workflow.

I’m interested in hearing the companies response on this, and what the reason could be that these small easy-to-implement features seem to be ignored. In the end, it’s the tiny details that make or break the total experience.

Thanks for your time, and looking forward to any response on this. Please don’t go the NI way!

The problem here is you’re using an example of a single (in my opinion very niche) feature that in reality will not even be on the radar for the vast majority of people.

It comes across as “Djay seem to be going the way of Native Instruments because they aren’t catering to my own requests”

I understand that you’ve likely opened this thread to find another way of shoehorning it into a discussion, but honestly it’s highly unlikely to get it any more traction, is more likely to frustrate other forum users who don’t want to see multiple threads about the same subject,

I understand what you’re saying, but these are just my examples. There are a ton of other examples from other people.

Imho what brought NI down is when they started ignoring these QoL features, and people that were using their software on a daily basis became frustrated with their standard “thanks for sharing, great idea, we’re gonna pass it to our developers” responses. And then crickets…

I’m just pointing out what I’m seeing. I see a lof of regular updates, which is good, but a lack of focus on quality-of-life improvements. My 2 cents of course.

Have you actually gone through the version history on the app store and read through the list of things theyve added or fixed in each version? I count 7 different versions in the past 6 months, each one containing lots and lots of fixes.

They’ve also just managed to add one of the major new advancements in DJ tech with Omnisource, which by all accounts has been incredibly difficult to implement. And they’ve done it for iOS too, with full screen information being passed across, again something which by all accounts is incredibly difficult to achieve.

I’m not talking about fixes or big new features, I’m talking about usability-improvements.

I totally understand the challenges of keeping parity when supporting so many target-platforms though…

Anyway, let’s see how things pan out… have a great weekend y’all!

I asked Copilot to summarise, looks to me like there has been lots of usability improvements. :man_shrugging:

Note: These are specifically the official djay Pro for Mac changes. The Windows, iPhone/iPad and Android releases sometimes have different version numbers and platform-specific additions or fixes.

Hi @olafmol, I appreciate you taking the time to write all this out. It’s great to hear how djay’s stacked up for you after years on Traktor. I also made the switch from Traktor many years ago.

First of all, I can assure you that user feedback here isn’t going into a black hole. Everything gets to our development team, and they really do value it. Detailed posts with concrete examples, like this one, are exactly what helps them understand how DJs are actually using djay.

On prioritizing — it’s rarely as simple as “good idea, ship it.” We’re weighing how many people something would actually help, how it fits with the rest of the app, and whether it holds up the same across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android plus all the hardware djay works with. We also balance that planning across new features, integrations and improvements to existing functionality. A change that looks small from the outside can touch more parts of the app than you’d expect, and when something ships, we want it to work reliably everywhere. So if a request hasn’t appeared in an update yet, that doesn’t mean it’s been dismissed or marked as unimportant.

Regarding your two specific asks — the -3dB headroom option and BPM/key filtering in the library (the Traktor comparison is genuinely useful context, by the way) — I’ve flagged both with the team again. I can’t give you a timeline or promise they land, but these are on their radar. I hope that helps!

Thanks again for sharing this @olafmol. Detailed feedback like this is genuinely useful and appreciated by our devs.

Thanks for the detailed summary of this @STU-C. Wow, even for me that looks like a lot!

Hi @Slak_Jaw appreciate your detailed reply and the effort your putting in alll of this!

You’re welcome @olafmol

@olafmol I’m with you. A lot of people in here will shut you down for criticism, even constructive criticism of DJay. Credit where it’s due… It’s come a long way and it pretty dang amazing, not to mention looks the best out of any on Mac displays (if not a bit cluttered - and you still can’t view cues and loops at the same time). Being compatible with more controllers than any other software, being cross platform and utilizing cloud sync for cues is all quite unique and ahead of others.
But, I too see the prioritization of adding new controllers (which potentially adds new users in part because it makes for an exciting headline), and while features I’d consider “obvious” because they’re standard in nearly every other DJ software continue to get overlooked (example: manually selecting the master deck). Who asked for Airpods Pro mic compatibility fixes?

I’m invested in Djay, having recently bought the Mixtour Pro. But, being a DJ for 20+ years, I’m stuck in my ways and can’t fully move over for having more effects, more cues and loops… but no control over master deck (which I use during every transition), and a file management system meant for streaming tracks (which causes ghost files and incorrect cues).

So, from where I’m standing, DJay Pro seems highly focused on new user acquisition through hardware compatibility additions and updates, while making it more usable by matching features for DJ’s who’d like to switch over from other platforms is de-prioritized.

Thanks for the detailed feedback @skymakai

nods humor surrounding it as well. sighs
