I have read the manual and watched a lot of Mixtour Pro videos looking for the answer to this, and couldn’t find out the answer to my question. So I’m hoping that someone who has a Mixtour Pro can either answer it or try it for me.
A little bit of background first. I’m fascinated by the form factor of the Mixtour Pro, and love the idea of turning up to a gig with just an iPad and Mixtour Pro. So I’ve been looking if it’ll fit into my workflow. The Mixtour Pro seems to cover pretty much all that I need, but there is one point that I’m unsure about. Quite often in my mixes, I’ll use hotcues to jump to particular parts of both track 1 (which is being mixed out of) and track 2 (which is the new track coming in). I do this by pressing a performance hotcue pad for both decks at the same time, triggering the relevant hot cues on both track 1 and track 2. With this technique, usually the hotcue for track 1,(which is being mixed out of) is in the hotcue 5 to 8 range and the hotcue for track 2 (which is the new track coming in) is in the hotcue 1 to 4 range).
As I hit these hotcues at the same time, therefore triggering the mix, I need to be able to utilise the split pad mode of the Mixtour Pro, but with deck 1 with hotcues 1 to 4 and deck 2 set to hotcues 5 to 8.
Is that possible on the Mixtour Pro?
Thanks all,
Andy.
No, that won’t work. When Split Mode is activated, only cue points 1-4 are available on both channels.
You could try adjusting the MIDI mapping on channel 1 so that cue points 1-4 and 5-8 are assigned to the other buttons, but that’s quite tedious and also means you’re stuck with a fixed configuration.
Thanks for your reply @Chris_R. I was worried that this was the case. I’ll try and email Reloop and see if they are open to feature requests. It seems like using the parameter button left and right would be candidates to switch between ranges of hotcues. Does that seem like a sensible option?
Other than that, I guess my only other way would be to add something like a Midifighter into the equation.
Hi @BillPayer, Chris_R is correct. Currently, only Hot Cues 1-4 are available in split mode. Also, I can’t think of any way to use the MIDI Learn tool in djay to toggle between 1-4 and 5-8. Probably you best option is to change your Hot Cue assignment workflow slightly. So, use 1-2 for Mix In points and 3-4 for Mix Out points. Then you have access to all of them when in split mode. Adding a Midifighter is another good option. I personally, use the Spectra along side my Mixtour Pro.
I’ve also changed how I work with this controller. Now, almost all my tracks have four cue points. Personally, I think that’s enough, unless you’re juggling a ton of things at once. But then again, I’m coming from the SL1200 era, long before a “hot cue” was even known to mankind.
We just knew where to put the needle because we knew the tracks.
Less is often more; minimalism makes life easier, even for DJs. For a while, I usually assigned eight cue points, but mostly just because I could. I rarely used them in practice - so rarely that at some point I switched to using more than four cue points only in exceptional cases. In that respect, using the Mixtour Pro in split mode wasn’t a big change.
Now there’s a second layer integrated, so you can use a total of 16 cue points. I find that a bit weird, and it’s no longer easy to keep track of. But hey, if you like it…
I get where you are coming from, and I was thinking that maybe I could adapt my workflow to make more use of the saved loops function, and use those as mix in/out points. I could jump to them in split mode and still keep using up to 8 cue points?
One other question I was just thinking of. I also make heavy use of beat jump. Both in track prep and sometimes to skip forward in a track if the track isn’t going down well. How does that Mixtour Pro handle beat jump duties?
Hi @BillPayer, I was also going to suggest Saved Loops for you Mix In/Out points. I used to use these as well. However, pressing these buttons on the hardware only turns the Saved Loops On/Off. It doesn’t jump to the loop like a Hot Cue does. Give it a try.
The (built-in) MIDI mapping doesn’t have any controls for Beat Jump/Skip. I also use this function a lot, so I customized my MIDI mapping. I use the Deck 1 MODE+Browse Knob for Deck 1 Skip and the Deck 2 MODE+Browse Knob for Deck 2 Skip. You will have to use the onscreen controls to set the Skip Size or custom map that to some other controls on the Mixtour Pro.
In the manual for the saved loops it says “Saved Loops - A bank of up to eight hot loops per track for instant recall. These hot loops act like saved cue points. Hold Shift and press the desired pad to trigger the saved loops instantly.”
Thanks for answering @Mister_Tuur. You are correct. It’s pretty easy to remap though if you don’t need the ability to delete hot cues from the hardware.
Sorry @BillPayer, I misunderstood what you where talking about here. Yes, SHIFT+Saved Loop will jump to that Loop(similar to pressing a Hot Cue button). Unlike with saved Hot Cues where SHIFT+Hot Cue clears the Hot Cue. I hope that helps!
Not sure if this is worth another thread, but curious how else you customize your mixtour pro mappings. This best jump one is perfect and adding it right away. I’m still struggling with changing which effect is active without using the laptop for example.
