Pick up Mode not working with Stems on Knobs (Hercules Ultra

Pickup mode is enabled for the 3 knobs (high/mid/low) on the Hercules DJControl Mix Ultra. These knobs double as Neural Mix stem controls when the center Neural Mix button is pressed.

Steps to reproduce:
1. In Neural Mix mode, turn a knob down to mute/lower a stem (e.g. vocals) on a track
2. Switch out of Neural Mix mode (e.g. adjust the EQ high on that same knob)
3. Switch back to Neural Mix mode
4. Slightly move the knob

Expected: pickup mode should require moving the knob back through the last set stem value before it responds.

Actual: the stem instantly jumps to the knob’s current physical position (i.e. the set EQ value), ignoring pickup mode.

Pickup mode works correctly for EQ-to-EQ switching, but not when switching between EQ and Neural Mix on the same physical knob.

Hi @Luca_Petria, welcome to the Community!

  1. Are you using the (built-in) MIDI mapping or a custom edit?
  2. Can you please capture and share a short video of this?

Thanks!

I’ve just tested this with Djay Pro 5.6.7 on iOS and can confirm with my Hercules Ultra that the pickup mode for Vocal works as intended in two deck Pro mode.

I’ll do some more testing later but on the face of it, looks ok to me.

Cheers

Thanks for confirming @James_Gillies. This is very helpful.

I spoke too soon! It seems like there definitely IS an issue with the pickup for Neural Mix versus the EQ on the Hercules Ultra.

I have just re-tested on Vocal, Harmonic and Drums on both channels and all appear to exhibit the same problem.

Having set the parameter (Vocal) to nothing, switch back to EQ mode and turn the knob back to centre, the pickup works as expected.

But when you then return to Neural Mix mode with the knob at 12 o’clock and then turn slightly to the right the Vocal jumps all the way out of nothing to just a bit past 12 o’clock to sync with the knob position. Pickup in this case is not honoured.

Do you require a video @Slak_Jaw ?

Cheers

OK…. after more testing I believe I can describe the problem. It is two-fold:

1.) The built-in MIDI mapping for Med and Low on both channels does NOT have Pickup mode enabled.

2.) And this is the really strange one, I had to test this over and over to work out what was happening here…. Pickup mode is ignored if either EQ or NM values are set to either +/- 100% ie. any other value is honoured, but when set to the extreme of 100% in either direction Pickup fails after switching back to the given mode and the knob has changed position.

I will try and get a video of this, as granted it is an unusual scenario. But it looks repeatable.

Update 1: Whilst trying to figure out a fully repeatable sequence I’ve discovered another element to this…

At first, I thought this was intermittent, but it in fact it only triggers when the previous mode was set to +/- 100% and the knob then gets set to 0% and left there. When you switch back to the mode at +/- 100% and turn the knob the value jumps to 0% to catch-up with the knob.

Any other values are ignored.

+/- 100% is a dependency, then set the knob to 0% (middle) and then switch back to the mode at 100% and you’ll trigger the problem.

Update 2: Just to confirm what is happening…

For either NM or EQ modes, if you set the value to +/- 100% and then switch to the opposite mode, and then change the knob to any value BUT then leave the value at exactly 0% before you switch back to the mode where +/- 100% is set, then Pickup is ignored.

It’s a combination of those two things.

If you leave the knob at any value other than 0% before switching back to the +/- 100% mode then the issue will not trigger, Pickup mode is in effect. Essentially it looks like Pickup mode is cleared when the knob is left at 0% and then switched to the opposite mode.

Update 3: The problem is global across Djay Pro in iOS and MacOS…

I just repeated my tests on Djay Pro 5.6.3 on MacOS, completely separate installation, with my MIDI-connected RANE MP2015 and the same issue occurs there.

It’s not isolated to iOS or MacOS, and has been there since at least 5.6.3 and likely before that.

So this should make it much easier for the devs to replicate as it looks like it is a general bug relating to how the Pickup mode works or is ignored when the previous mode is left at 0%

Hopefully something the devs can get stuck into.

Hey @James_Gillies, sorry for the delayed reply here. This is excellent troubleshooting work! Thank you for taking the time to isolate it so precisely - super helpful.

Just to confirm I’ve captured it before I log and try to reproduce it on the hardware that I have:

  1. Core trigger — with the previous mode set to +/- 100%, if the knob is moved to exactly 0% (center) and left there before switching back, Pickup is bypassed and the value jumps to catch the knob. Any non-zero value on switch-back keeps Pickup working.
  2. Not controller- or platform-specific — reproduces on the Hercules Ultra (iOS) across the EQ ↔ Neural Mix pairing and on your RANE MP2015 (macOS 5.6.3).
  3. Separately, the built-in Hercules Ultra mapping doesn’t appear to have Pickup enabled on the Med/Low knobs.

A short video would still be welcome for communicating this to our engineers if it’s easy to grab. Thanks!

Hi @Slak_Jaw - thanks very much for your reply!

Yes, agreed on your points, you’ve got it.

Please see following a link to a short video which shows this happening. I’ve kept it short as from an iPad the size adds up quickly!

The pickup is failing is both directions, both when trying to gracefully zero the EQ when the knob is fully left, and also when trying to gracefully zero the NM when the knob is centered. I can confirm that all three knobs have Pickup enabled, although it appears that Med and Low on both channels are disabled in the Built-in MIDI mapping.

You’re very welcome @James_Gillies. Thanks for clarifying and providing the video - super helpful once again! I don’t have a Hercules DJControl Mix Ultra to test for myself, so I’m passing this onto our hardware team for further review. I’ll report back when I have more news.

Hi @Slak_Jaw - no worries, glad to help. But just to confirm I don’t think the issue is isolated to the Hercules unit.

I’ve observed the same behaviour on MacOS using my Rane mixer over MIDI.

So it’s not isolated to iOS either I do t think.

Thanks a lot @James_Gillies for testing this further! I must be honest I don’t have the time to troubleshoot in so much detail so really appreciate this :raising_hands:t4:

Hey @Luca_Petria - no worries mate.

I’m an avid user of NM and MIDI-controlled functions so an apparent bug like this is something I was happy to get stuck into.

Everyone benefits from the fix after all, appreciate your feedback.

Cheers

James

Thanks for the additional clarifications @James_Gillies

Hi @Luca_Petria and @James_Gillies, our engineering team was able to reproduce this issue and they are investigating further. I’ll share more news here when I have it. Thanks!
