Recommended Setup DVS + Real Vinyl

Hi,

My General Setup

  • Allen & Heath Xone PX5
  • Turntable 1 (Technics 1200 MK2)
    • connected to PX5 phono Input Channel 3
    • USB LINE / PHONO select switch set to “PH”
  • Turntable 2 (Technics 1200 MK2)
    • connected to PX5 phono Input Channel 4
    • USB LINE / PHONO select switch set to “PH”
  • iPad
    • latest Djay Pro Software
    • connected to PX5 USB input
    • Hardware Mode (2 Decks)

My Goal

  • mix real vinyl + DVS

I’ve got this to work in general, but wondering about which setup from the ones below is recommended.

Setup 1

  • Turntable 1 + Turntable 2
    • Input select switch set to “PHONO”
  • Djay Pro
    • Audio Device Setup
      • Deck 1: “XONE PX5 ch 1-2” (Input Channel 1)
      • Deck 2: “XONE PX5 ch 3-4” (Input Channel 2)
    • DVS
      • Deck1: “XONE PX5 ch 5-6” (Input Channel 3)
      • Deck2: “XONE PX5 ch 7-8” (Input Channel 4)
  • Usage
    • Digital (DVS)
      • Output to Input Channel 1 and 2
      • Controlled through turntables connected to Input Channel 3 and 4
      • DVS mode “REL”
    • Real vinyl
      • Output to Input Channel 3 and 4
      • Optional: DVS mode “INT”
        • If a track is loaded Djay Pro tries to handle the analog vinyl signal otherwise
  • Cons
    • All 4 Xone PX5 channels needed
    • DVS signal audible on turntable Input Channel (Line Fader or Gain needs to be down)
  • Pros
    • Pure analogue signal from real vinyl to master (?)

Setup 2

  • Turntable 1 + Turntable 2
    • Input select switch set to “USB”
  • Djay Pro
    • Audio Device Setup
      • Deck 1: “XONE PX5 ch 5-6” (Input Channel 3)
      • Deck 2: “XONE PX5 ch 7-8” (Input Channel 4)
    • DVS
      • Deck1: “XONE PX5 ch 5-6” (Input Channel 3)
      • Deck2: “XONE PX5 ch 7-8” (Input Channel 4)
  • Usage
    • Digital (DVS)
      • Output to Input Channel 3 and 4
      • Controlled through turntables connected to Input Channel 3 and 4
      • DVS mode “REL”
    • Real vinyl
      • Output to Input Channel 3 and 4
      • DVS mode “THRU”
  • Cons
    • Real vinyl analogue signal converted to digital (?)
  • Pros
    • Just 2 Xone PX5 channels used

Is there an analogue to digital conversion involved in Setup 2 for real vinyl?
Any other pros and cons?
Anything else I missed?

Hi @mdaun, welcome to the Community! There’s actually a much simpler and recommended way to do this that is!

  • djay Audio Device Setup / DVS
    • Just reset to djay defaults
      • Deck 1: Input/Output 3-4 (Mixer Channel 2)
      • Deck 2: Input/Output 5-6 (Mixer Channel 3)
  • Usage
    • Digital (DVS)
      • DVS mode “REL”
      • Mixer Input select switch set to “USB”
    • Real vinyl
      • Mixer Input select switch set to “PHONO”
  • Pros
    • No unnecessary digital conversion for real vinyl
    • Only two channels on the Xone PX5 used
  • Cons
    • (None)

Hey @Slak_Jaw, thanks for the support. I was a bit hesitant about that approach as I’d be switching quite regularly between Phono and USB. Don’t know how long this switch will make it then :nerd_face:

Does the mode “THRU” actually lead to an AD conversion then?
