Hi everyone,

I’d love to see an enhancement in the smart playlists feature. Currently, we can only use the AND operator, but in many cases, I need the flexibility of an OR operator as well.

Here’s how I manage my library: I use the “Genre” metadata tag to indicate the main genre of a track. If a track also resonates with other genres, I add the sub-genre in the comment field, prefixed with a specific ASCII emoji to signify that it’s a sub-genre.

**Example:**

- **Track:** Elijay - 1080p
- **Genre:** UKDance
- **Comment:** ♫NeoSoul

In this example, the primary genre is UKDance, but the track also has a NeoSoul vibe, which I denote in the comments.

To organize my music more efficiently, I want to create a smart playlist that includes all tracks that feel like NeoSoul. For this, I need the following criteria:

- **Genre:** NeoSoul OR **Comment contains:** ♫NeoSoul

Unfortunately, this isn’t currently possible with the existing functionality.

Below are two screenshots illustrating this issue with another genre (Breakbeat).

Only “Genre” rule

“Genre” AND Comment contains rule

Hi @trebbis, the **OR** command is actually possible within a single criteria/rule.

1. If you want a Smart Playlist that contains Genre 1 **OR** Genre 2, you need to select both of the Genres within a Single Rule.

2. If you want a Smart Playlist that contains **BOTH** Genre 1 **AND** Genre 2, then you need to create separate Genre Rules for each one.

Thanks for the feedback @Slak_Jaw but this is not what I am looking for. I want to be able to have the OR criteria between different criteria like in this exmaple _`Genre`_ and _`Comment contains`_.

Do you see a possibility for this?

You’re welcome @trebbis. Yes, I understood what you were asking for above and I have shared this with the dev team for consideration. What I offered above is how OR currently works in djay so you can possibly find a work around with your current workflow. Thanks.

Is it possible to have an “or” operator instead of the “and” operator rule.

for example, I’d like a smart playlist to display artist contains wutang or wu-tang. when both rules are displayed, nothing shows up, but when i select an individual rule in edit, it then shows for each rule. To me this just creates too many extra steps just to see all the tracks that have either “wutang” or “wu-tang”

Will there ever be an “or” operator function in the rules just like many other dj applications?

Definitely voting for this.

Other operators such as “in between” or “not” etc would be really handy as well.

I need to look at the currently offered operators, but if “OR” is not included then I think it’s pretty basic as it stands.

I have to say after now again deep diving on this subject. There is currently no **OR** operator between two or more different criteria possible. Please correct me if I am wrong.

E.g.

If I wanted a smart playlist that contains tracks that have either the **GENRE** “Hip-Hop” **OR** the **COMMENT** “New Jack Swing”, so that the playlist shows all tracks with the genre “Hip-Hop” and the tracks with the comment “New Jack Swing” in one playlist.

It is not possible as far as I can tell as you can not change the operator between the operators to **OR**.

On the topic of smart playlist say I don’t want a genre or genres.
So I want to show tunes without disco, funk, soul etc.

Hi @Ramon_Richie, “is not” Genre is currently not possible with Smart Playlist.

I agree with this suggestion. All operators should be included. For instance, I like to provide a color assignment to tracks that I have “completed”, including accurate beat grids, loops, cue points, etc. I would love to make a playlist that is all tracks that are "NOT” green color which would be the list of tracks that I still need to finish preparing.

There would also be a ton of other very useful aspects to have a more robust smart filter functionality with and/or/not etc.

hello

actual form of genre choice in smart playlists are irrational, because in open format certain track can be assigned to 5+ genres for example

there is need to choice like ‘contains’
