Xone 96 and two K2 MIDI channel issue

  • Device model: MacBook pro m4:
  • Version of operating system: Tahoe
  • Version of djay: 5.6.1
  • Hardware/controllers used: Allen heath Xone 96, x2 xone k2

I’m trying to map a xone 96 with 2 k2 connected via xlink with djay pro on mac. Despite They have all different midi channel (14,15 and 16) the app sees both k2s as one (when I move the faders on the left one or the right one it detects the same midi message, not counting the different channel). Also, when I press certain midi enabled buttons on the 96, it sees them as a message equal to some buttons on both k2. I tried to map in Traktor and everything worked fine and has his own midi channel. It seems to me that the problem is that djay pro doesn’t distinguish between midi channels and elaborates just the cc or note.

Hi @Franz_Navas, welcome to the Community! Please try connecting the K2’s directly to your Mac via USB cables instead of the Xlink cables to your mixer. You can use a USB hub if your Mac doesn’t have enough USB ports.

Ok but it defeats the purpose of using xlink. It’s clearly a lacking part of the software that imho can be fixed making Djay recognise a basic thing like midi channels. Traktor worked like that for the past 15 years, djay has so many cool features and lacks in this basic things. I don’t really understand where the problem is.

Hi @Franz_Navas, please note that the K2 is currently not officially supported with djay so we cannot guarantee if the Xlink protocol will work.

  • From what we can tell from the A&H documentation when using X-Link, MIDI from all attached K2 devices will be sent to djay from the mixer as if it was coming from buttons/sliders on the mixer itself.
  • To distinguish multiple K2 units you need to set them to different MIDI channels.
  • This should mean that you can MIDI map K2 units connected over X-Link (or from another perspective: if you want to use X-Link you have to MIDI map the K2 units individually, since djay only “sees” the Xone and doesn’t know the MIDI is actually coming from a K2)
  • I hope that helps.

I appreciate the help. The problem is that although the k2 are on different channels, it seems that Djay doesn’t take count of the different midi channels and sees only the note/cc. It seems very strange behaviour to me, but I need to know if this is the case or it’s a strange behaviour of my equipment that, as I said before, works as intended in Traktor so I can’t see why it behaves differently. If djay is not programmed to do so I quit my crusade and use a usb hub, but I think that one of the most popular mixers on the market should be able to use one of its main features as xlink in a powerful software like djay… it can be a game changer for those (like me) that are making the switch from Traktor.

You’re welcome @Franz_Navas, I don’t know what else to tell you here. I don’t have a pair of K2’s to check for myself. If the info I shared above doesn’t help, then I recommend you connect via USB hub instead.

If I’ll have the possibility to try with the new k3 I’ll report the behaviour for the community. Hopefully the k3 will be supported officially :crossed_fingers:t2:

Sounds good @Franz_Navas
