2026 STEMs Quality Comparison - DJcityTV (Mojaxx)

Mojaxx has done an update to his STEMs quality comparison video from 2022. I like how he’s put this together with the waveforms visible for comparison.

Obviously this is very subjective and Mojaxx doesn’t pick any winners, but I’m very curious to hear which DJ software everyone here prefers for each type of STEMs separation:

  • DRUMS: Rekordbox
  • DRUMS: Serato
  • DRUMS: djay Pro
  • DRUMS: Virtual DJ
  • DRUMS: Traktor Pro
  • DRUMS: Engine DJ

Preferred DJ software for Bass separation:

  • BASS: Rekordbox
  • BASS: Serato
  • BASS: djay Pro
  • BASS: Virtual DJ
  • BASS: Traktor Pro
  • BASS: Engine DJ

Preferred DJ software for Other separation:

  • OTHER: Rekordbox
  • OTHER: Serato
  • OTHER: djay Pro
  • OTHER: Virtual DJ
  • OTHER: Traktor Pro
  • OTHER: Engine DJ

Preferred DJ software for Vocal separation:

  • VOCALS: Rekordbox
  • VOCALS: Serato
  • VOCALS: djay Pro
  • VOCALS: Virtual DJ
  • VOCALS: Traktor Pro

One thing is clear watching this video compared to the 2022 one - STEMS have improved considerably across all DJ apps. Great to see!

I can’t take part in this survey because I don’t own all the relevant software. I only have DJay and Traktor.

For me, more than the quality of the stems, it’s the ability to create them live that’s the deciding factor. Traktor certainly generates high-quality stems (like most programmes these days, including DJay), but they need to be prepared in advance, which leaves very little room for improvisation.

In my case, I mix very long sets, lasting several hours, and I can’t rely on a pre-planned playlist. So there’s a lot of improvisation involved. Since I’ve been mixing with DJay and using stems, my approach to mixing has completely changed; I constantly use stems (along with loops) for my transitions – the potential is endless.

I’ve never been able to use Virtual DJ, but I can see a feature in their stems that I’d be very interested in having in DJay: the ability to isolate the kick. I mix a lot of electronic music, and it would help me even more to be able to isolate the rhythm section and remove the kick whilst leaving the bassline, for example. Great for EDM.

Hi @Chapalo, thanks for the input. In the second half of the video above, Mojaxx does audio comparisons of each software and each STEM part. You don’t need the apps to do your own comparisons - you can simply listen to the differences in his video.

A stem quality survey on the Algoriddim forum and everyone’s voted for djay Pro…

How unexpected

You are of course free to create your own survey on the Virtual DJ forum. I mostly thought this would be fun and wanted to share Mojaxx’s video…

I wasn’t being negative - I just found it funny.

For those using djay Pro on Windows though (which limits the quality, where other DJ s/w does not) it’s not as clear cut IMO.

Majority of influences, dj training schools, dj bloggers think also that Djay pro comes out on top. VDJ not far behind though.
