Hi there,
I think this is a general functionality question, so I have not listed my hardware spec, thanks.
If using Djay Pro in DVS mode (Mac/iOS) with 7 inch control vinyl, and use relative mode versus absolute mode, what happens when the control vinyl runs out of time, will the track playing in Djay just stop because there is a loss of signal coming through?
I understand being constrained by the absolute method timings-wise, but in relative mode, where the 7 inch gives a maximum of say 5 minutes, if your track is longer than that what happens when it is playing? Will it continue to play as long as you don’t stop the turntable?
Cheers
James
Hi @James_Gillies, I’m definitely not a DVS expert, and I don’t have a DVS setup to confirm the behaviour, but from my research I believe djay will behave as follows:
In relative mode, the “run out” scenario (needle reaching the end of the timecode grooves on the 7-inch vinyl) results in a loss of signal because the needle is no longer tracking a valid timecode. However, this does not cause the track to stop. Instead:
- djay automatically switches the deck to Internal mode upon signal loss. In Internal mode, the track continues playing at normal speed (1x forward) using djay’s built-in transport controls, ignoring any further input from the turntable/vinyl until you restore the signal.
- This behavior ensures seamless continuation— the music keeps going without interruption, which is ideal for live mixing to avoid dead air.
- If your track is longer than the vinyl’s timecode (e.g., a 10-minute song on a 5-minute vinyl), it will play through fully in relative mode as long as you maintain the signal initially. Once the needle hits the end and signal drops, it shifts to Internal and finishes the track normally.
Hi @Slak_Jaw , thanks very much for the detailed response.
That’s really good news, seems like a positive scenario at least!
Cheers
