I moved from a DDJ SB3 to a DDJ 400, running the latest version of Djay Pro AI on an iPad Air 3rd Gen.
I’m not sure how to access FX from the controller. The SB3 had 3 hardware buttons mapped to the first 3 FX effects. Can I use FX on the controller or only on the iPad?
If yes, how? Thanks guys
Hi at @tfmeier, the hardware FX section of the DDJ-400 is to the right of the EQs.
You can also control FX via your iPad screen when in Pro Mode. The screenshot below is on iPhone, but it looks pretty similar on iPad.
Thanks. Maybe I didn’t phrase my question properly.
I’m aware of the FX section on the iPad and controller but using the FX section on the controller doesn’t change the FX on Djay Pro AI so I’m not sure if this I mapped at all or it’s an issue on mine
Ah, okay. That’s more clear now. Please make sure the FX Select switch on the hardware is set to 1 or 2 and not Master. Retest and let me know if that helps.
Ok, here’s how it behaves for me.
I can select the FX via the FX SELECT button but I can only change the first of the 3 slots - see screenshot.
Button 1, 2 & Master either select deck 1, 2 or both and then turning them on via the blue button activates the effect on either 1, 2 or both. So there’s no option to layer effects on the controller (e.g. using effect 1 & 2 on a deck which is probably more relevant for A/V or video FX). The FX slider (controlled by BEAT < & > is always applied to both decks.
Is this how this is supposed to behave which means I will have to active FX 2 and 3 on the app itself?
Hi @tfmeier, yes, it is behaving as expected. The hardware is MIDI mapped to only control the first Manual FX slot for each deck. If you want to layer multiple FX with slots 2 and 3, you will need to do this via the touchscreen on you iPad.
However, it is possible to modify the (built-in) MIDI mapping to potentially change this behavior to your liking. Given the limited controls on the DDJ-400, I would probably recommend the following:
- Leave the FX On/Off buttons for FX Slot 2 and FX Slot 3 as touchscreen only controls so you can turn these On/Off as needed.
- Read our FAQ on how to MIDI map on iOS: https://help.algoriddim.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016055199-How-do-I-MIDI-map-a-controller-on-djay-for-iOS
- While in the MIDI Learn tool, rotate the LEVEL/DEPTH knob on the DDJ-400
- Use the Duplicate function by pressing and sliding left on a MIDI command
- Select the new duplicate command below the original and change the Action from FX 1 Parameter to FX 2 Parameter.
- Perform the Duplicate function again and this time set the new one to FX 3 Parameter.
- Now this knob will control all three FX Parameters in djay instead of only the first one.
I hope that helps!

Thanks for that. Very helpful indeed and great to know I can change this mapping.
On a side note I wanted to use the Favorites section of FX given the massive amount of effects in Djay Pro AI. However the message on the app wasn’t correct. Said something like “press the star to add it to favorites…”. Only found out when checking the user manual that you have to slide the effect to the left to add it to favorites. Maybe something for a subsequent release
