Add a Setting to disable specific MIDI devices in djay

OS: Windows 10 Pro
DAW: Reason
DJ Mixer: RMX95 with Phase
Audio: FocusRite Scarlett 18i8

Because Windows only allows a device to talk to one app at a time, whenever I open DJ Pro and Reason at the same time all MIDI controllers stop working in Reason. I know that I can create a virtual MIDI port, and Reason lets me turn off MIDI devices, so I can select which are active there. However, I was very surprised to find that my DJ Pro interface/app does not appear to have the ability to select which MIDI devices get a config and simply binds to all of them. Is it really true that I cannot run DJ Pro and my DAW-of-choice on the same Windows machine at the same time?!

FYI: It is interesting to note that I CAN get audio to work because I have have my FocusRite handling the Reason stream and my ReLoop RMX95 handling my DJ Pro audio…it sounds great from DAW and turntable…it’s the MIDI only that is failing.

Hi @Matthue_DeYarus, welcome to the Community! Currently, djay binds to every MIDI device it can find. However, I have changed this topic from a Question to a Suggestion and forwarded this to the dev team for consideration. In the meantime, please use the blue Vote button at the top left of this page to show your interest in adding a djay option for turning off specific MIDI devices. Thanks!

Hey @Slak_Jaw:
Thanks so much for clearing this up, because I always have to consider the possibility that I am just being a dunder-head → but occasionally, like in this case, it is actually a software problem!

Unfortunately, this ends my relationship with your otherwise excellent product. I often have DAW synths and turntables being played at the same time in my small studio and so that’s a deal-killer. My budget for building out my setup was about 30K euro/dollar and I only had enough for one 4K laptop…I cannot afford a second one just to run the DJ stuff. I think I might be a typical small-time producer with this particular challenge, so this is an important update in your ‘pro’ offering.

Sincerely, --Matthue

Thanks for the additional details @Matthue_DeYarus. We are sorry to see you go. One option that might work for you is to run djay on an iPad or iPhone instead of your laptop. Personally, I prefer using djay on iPad. Also note that a single djay subscription works across all supported platforms. I hope that helps!
