Opus is a totally open, royalty-free, highly versatile audio codec. Opus is unmatched for interactive speech and music transmission over the Internet, but is also intended for storage and streaming applications. It is standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as RFC 6716 which incorporated technology from Skype’s SILK codec and Xiph.Org’s CELT codec.

Just wanted to make sure you were talking about Opus Codec and not the Opus Quad hardware.

Yes about Opus Codec

downloading audio from YouTube, Opus generally offers better quality than M4A or MP3 at similar bitrates. Opus is a more modern audio codec that provides better compression efficiency, allowing for smaller file sizes while maintaining or improving audio quality compared to older formats like MP3 and even M4A, which often uses the AAC codec.

Why choose Opus for YouTube downloads?

  • Better Compression:

Opus can achieve higher quality audio at lower bitrates than MP3 or AAC, resulting in smaller file sizes without sacrificing much (or any) noticeable audio quality.

  • YouTube’s Support:

YouTube utilizes Opus for its higher-quality audio streams, especially for music and videos.

  • Compatibility:

While compatibility was initially a concern, more devices and software are now supporting Opus, making it a viable choice for many.

When comparing file formats, consider:

  • Bitrate: A higher bitrate generally means better quality, but also larger file sizes.
  • Codec Efficiency: Opus is known for its high efficiency, meaning it can achieve better quality at lower bitrates than other codecs.
  • Device Support: Ensure your devices and software can play the format you choose.

In summary, when downloading audio from YouTube, especially if you prioritize quality and smaller file sizes, Opus is generally the better choice over M4A or MP3.
