I am still struggeling with the Auto Gain feature, not having the same gain level throughtout my sets.
This sometimes leads to differences in the volume when I did not check the volume before fading in. Cannot remember that I had similar difficulties with other DJ software. I am aware that some tracks come with volume differences but I check them after download before adding them to my playlists and do manual gain adjustments in the software if required.
I wonder what are the best settings in DjayPro that help to “forget” the gain issues.
My current settings are:
- Auto-Gain: ON
- Restore manually set Gain: ON
- Separate Gain Controller/App: ON
- Audio Limiter: ON
- Headroom: NONE
I use regular MP3 files without gain modifications with MP3GAIN software etc.
I do manual gain adjustments in DjayPro.
Any hints / suggestions of DJs that have different settings leading to less problems? Or is it normal to check any track before fading in?
I’ll get back to you on this tomorrow — I’m new to djay Pro (coming from Rekordbox) and I’m going to use it live for the first time at my club set. Hopefully it won’t fail
I’ve noticed that the gain, which I have set to auto, is always below the halfway point. My files are FLAC with no kind of processing or alteration, and from what I’ve tested at home, it doesn’t seem to be an issue.
However, in Rekordbox, which also has this feature, the level usually sits right around the halfway mark on the gain knob.
As a DJ with many decades of experience I’d say yes. At the very least you listen to the track after loading, to set your starting point. If you’re beat mixing, you’d listen longer to check the track will stay in sync. Either way you’re hearing how the volume compares, and the EQ, and adjusting as required.
On the other hand, I suppose there are DJs who set cue points in advance and rely on autosync - but IMO it’s always good practice to check.
I totally agree. One thing is what the software intends to do, and another is how the actual output volume behaves compared to the track that’s playing or the one that’s about to play.
But it’s true — this is a djay Pro feature, and anyone who uses it can notice the difference compared to other DJ software.
As I mentioned earlier, today will be the first time I use djay Pro live during my set — I really hope it doesn’t fail. I’ve set up Auto Gain, mainly for those moments when I use Automix for specific reasons, but during normal mixing, I’ll make sure to check the output level manually first.
Totally agree, guys, I do a lot of checks with the new tracks but as for the volume I had the (naive?) expectation that “Auto” Gain actually adjusts the track volume…
