Automatic playback with Instant FX - Hold Off

Hi,

I accidentally discovered that music will start playing from the most recent Cue Point as soon as you trigger one of the Instant FX — at least when the Hold button is disabled.

You can see what I mean in this video

I’m curious: is this actually the intended behavior?

Also, I’d like to know if it’s possible to remap the Instant FX buttons — and if so, how can that be done because i like to use the instant FX buttons in combination with the controller.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @DJ_Big_Blender, thanks for the video and details. Please note, that if your videos are less than 200MB you can now upload them directly to the Community instead of adding them to ScreenPal and linking them. This should make things more efficient for you and everyone else.

I was able to replicate this on my iOS device as well. Honestly, I’m not sure if this is a feature or not. Let me check with the devs and get back to you…

EDIT: I spoke with engineering and this is indeed expected behavior with Hold disabled. The idea is that in HOLD mode you activate FX long term, so here it’d make sense to activate an FX then start playback. Without HOLD mode it’s more about brief effects, so this behavior allows you to e.g. cue up a word in a vocal and then play it with the instant FX applied just on the single button press. Note that the song stops again when you release the Instant FX button, so it’s a temporary playback.

Do you mean that you want to change which Instant FX is assigned to each slot or do you want to know how to MIDI map Instant FX to buttons on your hardware?

To change which FX are assigned to each slot see below:

If you want to know the MIDI commands so you can map this to pads on your hardware, please see below:

Please note, that it is not currently possible to MIDI map specific Instant FX Selections, so you need to use the Edit Process in the first image above if you want to change which Instant FX are assigned to each slot. I hope that helps!

Hi @Slak_Jaw,

Thanks for the reply!

To clarify: I’m wondering whether it’s at all possible to control or trigger the Instant FX via a MIDI controller. I’ve never figured out how to do that — so if it is possible, I’d love to know how to set it up.

And regarding your note on uploading videos directly to the Community: thanks for pointing that out! However, for me, sharing via ScreenPal is actually the easiest option — my videos are automatically uploaded there, so it doesn’t require any extra effort on my part. But I’ll keep the direct upload option in mind in case I ever need it.

Appreciate you checking in with the devs, looking forward to hearing more!

You’re welcome @DJ_Big_Blender. Please see above for the EDIT response from engineering.

Yes, I shared how to MIDI map Instant FX in the second image above. Press the pad on your MIDI controller while in the MIDI Learn tool, set the Target to Deck 1, then set the Action to Instant FX 1-8. Then repeat this for the remaining Instant FX and for all 4 Decks. For more info on how to MIDI Map in djay please refer to the FAQ linked below:

Hey!

I’ve noticed that too—it seems like when you trigger one of the Instant FX with the Hold button off, it jumps to the most recent Cue Point. I’m not 100% sure if that’s intended, but it definitely feels like it could be part of how the software is designed to work.

As for remapping the Instant FX buttons, it’s usually possible in the settings or controller software, but it depends on the specific app or device you’re using. You might need to look for a “Controller Mapping” option in the settings or use dedicated software (like for MIDI controllers) to customize the buttons to work with your setup.

Hi @PeterDaloka, welcome to the Community! Please see above. This is intended behavior when Hold is disabled for Instant FX.

Hi @Slak_Jaw,

Thanks again! It’s clear now how the Instant FX work and how the MIDI mapping is set up. I even discovered that on the Reloop controller, the Instant FX were already mapped under the secondary function of the Loop Roll button!

Now that I know this, I’ll probably start using them more often.

Appreciate your help as always!

Excellent! You’re welcome @DJ_Big_Blender. Happy to help!

@DJ_Big_Blender it is indeed possible if you follow the mapping instructions. You will find it very intuitive. I personally have instant effects mapped to a midifighter 3d this allows me to have my pads always set to que points triggering on my DJ controller. Good luck and happy mapping, it’s fun!
