Automix on iPad not starting from a given song in Queue

  • Device model : iPad before M1
  • Version of operating system : IOS : 16.7.10
  • Version of djay : 5.2.4
  • Hardware/controllers used : Not controller related

Hello,
Automix works great on my Mac, but I have issues on my iPad, when Automix is sourced with the Main Queue :

With Automix on the Mac, it is possible to start the Automix wherever in the queue. Starting from a song in the queue, Automix will then continue to the next one which is how it should be. On the iPad, when selecting a song in the Queue, Djay will propose to put this one on top of the queue, or just play this one, but there is no way to just start Automix from there, while this is the standard behaviour on Djay for Mac. This is rather annoying. After playing this song, it will continue with the top of the queue. Not continue from where this song was, as Djay is doing on the Mac.

Clarification : When Automix is sourced with a Playlist on iPad (not the Main Queue, it works as expected).

Illustration

Automix behaviour on Mac working perfectly as expected

Start situation : Automix queue empty

Then loading a track from the queue on deck 1
We see Djay is already prepping Automix from the track following this one.

When starting Automix, it will correctly continue with the desired song (the song after where I started the queue.

Automix using Queue behaviour on ipad (not consistent with Mac)

Start situation : Just as for the Mac case, I pick a song in the queue (I want to start from there). To make the exemple easier to follow, I take the same as for Mac case.

But then we see Djay is not adapting the Automix Queue, it keeps the queue starting from the very beginning.

When starting Automix, it will then obviously start from the very beginning of the queue, regardless of the song I choose in the queue (you see the song “Intro” coming up instead of Kiss.

Thank you

Once again, thanks for the clear explanation and screenshots @Davidv100. This is super helpful. I’ve passed this onto the engineering team as well.

Hi @Davidv100, I spoke with our engineering team and this is expected behavior. On iOS Automix doesn’t have the notion of starting from a specific song in a list, but instead it lets you manage the list itself. This is due to the different user interaction models between macOS and iOS. You should rearrange the queue in the way you want to play it. Thanks!

This is a bit weird, tbh, @Slak_Jaw
Starting Automix on iPad from anywhere in a Playlist works perfectly on iPad.
It is only when Automixing from the queue that it acts differently on iPad.
(so all the above is iPad).

So, this would mean that by design the behaviour on iPad is different when using the main queue, or a playlist, whereas both are just lists, appearing exactly in the same place (you choose queue or playlist, but then it is just a list), and then you can even forget you were sourcing from the queue or a playlist, but then starting Automix from the middle of each, Djay would act completely differently… This can not be intentional, can it ?

Respectfully, this part of your message On iOS Automix doesn’t have the notion of starting from a specific song in a list is not in line with what I experience. As Automix on iPad does start correctly from anywhere in a playlist. The only issue is when sourcing from the queue (which is also a list).

Honestly, this seems not consistent to me. Automix should go the same with the queue as it does from a playlist, and this is also the Mac behaviour.

I am really insisting a bit for the sake of Djay being coherent, for its own good. So that we keep high standards.
