Big Volume increase using Crossfader

  • Device model iPad Air 6th Gen:
  • Version of operating system 18.5 ios
  • Version of djay (5.3.2:
  • Hardware/controllers used Reloop Mixon 8 Pro and Alpha theta ddj grv6

Hey everyone,

Whenever I move the crossfader from Deck 1 to Deck 2 (or vice versa), the incoming deck’s volume jumps noticeably, making it much louder than the previous deck. This forces me to manually lower the gain or EQ to compensate.

I’ve checked:

  • Crossfader curve settings in djay
  • Mixer mode configurations on both controllers
  • Firmware updates for both devices

Despite adjustments, the issue persists. Has anyone else encountered this? Any suggestions on settings or fixes would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Have a look to see if cross fader effects is on. It maybe you have a Crossfader effect that is effecting your transitions.

Hi @illya_kroon, thanks for the details about your setup and the issue. Please capture and share a short video of the issue along with screenshots of your Audio Devices, MIDI Devices and Sounds settings. Thanks.

@Slak_Jaw

Hi Slak_Jaw. This is the ddj grv6. I returned the mixon 8pro. I bought both to try them out to see which one i like most.
It does this with auto gain on or off. And also in auto mix mode.

Can you help me resolve this issue soon. I play at a festival tomorrow night.
Thanks in advance

Hi @illya_kroon, thanks for the videos - this is helpful.

  1. Please share a screenshot of your CFX settings so I can see what transition type you are using.
  2. Also share a screenshot of your djay Settings>Sound menu so I can see your Crossfader Curve and EQ Type.

@Slak_Jaw here you have the screen shots.
Ive have tried changing many of the sound settings but nothing helped. I also tried changing many of the Cfx setting.

Thanks @illya_kroon. Please try using CFX type Fade and EQ and let me know if that helps or not.

This is what you mean? I also captured antoher video .

@illya_kroon your screenshot looks like it didn’t upload properly, however, from the video, it does look like you were using the EQ CFX transition type.

  1. The first thing that seems odd in your video is your left Deck Gain looks like it is almost at zero. This should result in almost no sound through the main output.

    a. Are you using Auto Gain?
    b. Are you also manually adjusting the Gain Knob on your controller?
  2. Are you using the (built-in) MIDI mapping for your controller?
  3. Can you please share screenshots of your djay Settings>Audio Devices and Settings>MIDI Devices?
  4. Do you experience these same issue if you you just play off your iPad without connecting to your DJ controller?

Hello! It’s been a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!

Hi Slak_Jaw ,the deck gain happens whiteout me touching any.

Hi @illya_kroon, thanks for the follow up. Can you please answer the rest of my questions from above?

Also, can you please try the transition with Crossfader FX turned OFF and simply pressing the Mix Now button? This will perform the automatic crossfader without applying any FX. Let me know if you still experience the volume increase using this method.

Hi @Slak_Jaw

Sorry I haven’t replied the past few days—I’ve been tied up with DJ gigs. I haven’t been using the new DDJ-GRV6 lately; instead, I’ve been working with my trusty DDJ-200 and Hercules DJControl Mix. Both are running great with Djay, though I’m still getting some Bluetooth latency. On the plus side, there’s no issue with volume gain on the channels.

I had a chance to test the GRV6 again a few minutes ago, and unfortunately the problem’s still there. I’m hoping to dig into it more this week and follow up with you soon.

Thanks again for your awesome support!

Best regards,
Illya

No problem @illya_kroon. You’re welcome. Thanks for the update.

In the video I shared, Deck 1’s Gain knob was set very low, almost to zero — but during playback and especially during transitions, the volume was unexpectedly loud. This behavior is inconsistent with what I’d expect from that gain setting Auto Gain

:white_check_mark: Yes, I’ve been using Auto Gain in djay Pro.
:cross_mark: I also tested with Auto Gain disabled, and the volume jump still occurred — especially when transitioning from Deck 2 to Deck 1 using “Mix Now” or the manual crossfader. So the issue doesn’t appear to be caused solely by Auto Gain.Manual Gain Control

I did not touch the Gain knob manually during transitions in the video. I only adjusted it after hearing a volume spike to try and control the sudden jump. This confirms the behavior is not due to real-time controller input.

:level_slider: MIDI Mapping

I’m using the built-in MIDI mapping for the DDJ-GRV6 in djay — no custom edits. Since it’s officially supported, I expected the gain structure and transitions to be balanced across both decks out of the box.

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Manual Crossfade Test

Even when I manually transition using the crossfader, with Crossfader FX turned off, I still experience the same volume jump from Deck 2 to Deck 1. This rules out FX overlays or Automix behavior — it happens even with basic transitions.

:test_tube: Suspected Cause

At this point, it seems like djay may be applying some hidden gain normalization or compensation — possibly related to internal processing, or even Neural Mix handling — that boosts Deck 1 unexpectedly during transitions.

:camera_with_flash: Screenshots & Setup

• Audio Device Routing:• Mixer Mode: Internal
• Main Output: DDJ-GRV6 ch 1–2
• Pre-Cueing: DDJ-GRV6 ch 3–4
• iPad Speaker: Disabled
• Booth/Mic: Not in use

• MIDI Device Status:• DDJ-GRV6 fully connected and recognized
• Scratch Mode enabled, default FX settings used

:movie_camera: Video Evidence

Here’s the video I recorded that captures the volume spike in real time. You’ll see that Deck 1’s gain is almost down to zero, and yet it plays back louder than expected — regardless of whether Auto Gain or FX are enabled.

Hi @illya_kroon, thanks for the additional info. This is starting to sound like it could be an issue with the GRV6 hardware.

  1. Can you replicate this same volume spike with transitioning from Deck 2 to Deck 1 with no hardware connected (just playing on the iPad)?
  2. Can you confirm that the same issue occurs with a different DJ controller?

Hi @Slak_Jaw thanks for your input — and I believe you’re right. I’ve now tested this behavior across multiple devices and setups, and the issue consistently points to the GRV6 hardware:

  • :low_battery: Test without controller (iPad only): No volume spike when transitioning between decks using djay on its own. Everything works as expected.
  • :mobile_phone: Test with GRV6 on Android (Samsung Galaxy): Volume spike does occur when transitioning from Deck 2 to Deck 1.
  • :laptop: Test with GRV6 on Windows PC: Same issue — loud jump in volume despite low gain settings on Deck 1.

I haven’t been able to replicate the issue with software alone or using other controllers — so at this point it’s clear the behavior is tied specifically to the GRV6 hardware itself. Whether it’s something in the internal signal path or the way the unit interfaces with djay, it’s definitely controller-dependent

You’re welcome @illya_kroon. Seems like a hardware issue.
One last thing you could check. I don’t have a GRV6 to confirmation, but does it have a physical Crossfader Curve adjustment knob or switch? This is usually found on the front panel of the hardware.

EDIT: I just checked the GRV6 user manual and it looks like it does not have a hardware Crossfader Curve control.

Hi@Slak_Jaw
Hope you’re doing well. I wanted to follow up regarding the volume spike issue I’ve been experiencing with my DDJ-GRV6 controller while using djay.

Per your suggestion, I replaced my unit with a brand new DDJ-GRV6 today. Unfortunately, the issue remains—the volume still spikes unexpectedly when using the new controller with djay.

To help illustrate this, I recorded two video clips:

  1. The first shows the new controller experiencing volume spikes while running djay.
  2. The second shows the same controller functioning flawlessly with Rekordbox for mobile on my iPad—no volume spikes at all.

For consistency, I used the same music in both tests—and even replayed the same track several times within djay. The volume spike issue persisted every time, which reinforces that it’s not tied to the specific track but potentially to the djay software’s behavior with the DDJ-GRV6.

I live in the Netherlands and purchased the controller from Elevator – Future of Music DJ Store in Münster, Germany. I spoke with the store today when I went to exchange the controller, and they advised me to follow up both with you and with them if the issue persists, since they are partners with Algoriddim.

Please let me know if you’d like any further details or logs. I’ve attached both clips for your reference, and I appreciate your help in looking into this further.

Best regards,
Illya
