"Could not load track" - 16 bit ALAC - Windows

Hardware: Dell XPS13 i7-1195G7, 16GB RAM
OS: Windows 10 22H2
Djay pro version: 5.4.2

I just downloaded the software to try it out, having been a long time (almost 20 years) serato user.

70-80% of my tracks are not loading. Most of my library are .m4a Apple lossless files, but the application is loading some of these files so it’s not specific to the file format. If it doesn’t load one track from an album then it doesn’t load any of them.

My files are organised by iTunes but are physically stored on my device (i’m not using Apple Music or similar). The files play fine in Windows. Djay pro can even detect tempo on many of them.

Occasionally i get “could not detect sample rate” when I try and load one of these tracks, but more usually i just get no waveform and “could not load track” under the track name.

Pretty odd and disappointing, there’s nothing wrong with these files as far as I know. I tried changing my sound card sample rate from 48000 to 44100 just to see if that made any difference but no.

It does this whether i use WASAPI or ASIO4All drivers.

I have a Rane Seventy Two but have not tried connecting it yet.

I’ve done more troubleshooting and been able to confirm what is causing this problem. 24 bit ALAC files work fine in Djay Pro for Windows. 16 bit ALAC files do not.

If I take a 16 bit ALAC file and convert it to FLAC, or to 24 bit ALAC, it works. If I convert it back to a 16 bit ALAC file, it doesn’t.

I’m sort of bemused that I’m the first person to find this…?

Hi @meezoid, welcome to the Community! Sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue. Thanks for the details about your setup and the issue - this is very helpful! I was not able to able to replicate this on my setup so I’ve forward this to our engineering team for further investigation.

Hi @meezoid, our engineering team has confirmed that we don’t currently support ALAC format on Windows.

:frowning:

Wow, ok… back to serato then I guess.

This still seems to be an issue, a couple months later. This seems so oddly specific of a bug.

Hi @Mild_Spice, I’ve merged the other topic with this one. Our engineering team has confirmed that we don’t currently support ALAC format on Windows, however, they are investigating the possibility of adding this in the future. Thanks!
