Could Someone Give me Advice on Transitioning from djay Pro AI on iPad to Mac?

Hello there,

I have been using djay Pro AI on my iPad for a while now and absolutely love its intuitive interface and features like Neural Mix. It is been a game changer for my casual gigs and practice sessions. Although; I am considering transitioning to djay Pro AI on a MacBook for a more powerful setup and a larger screen; but I have a few questions and concerns.

Are there any features on the Mac version that significantly differ from or improve upon the iPad version? For example; does the Mac version have better performance for Neural Mix or additional customization options?

I am planning to use a Pioneer DDJ-400 controller. Is the integration with djay Pro AI on Mac seamless, or are there any known issues I should be aware of? Also; are there any other controllers you’d recommend for use with the Mac version?

How does the workflow on the Mac version compare to the iPad version? Is it easy to adapt; or should I anticipate a learning curve?

Also, I have gone through this post; https://community.algoriddim.com/t/ipad-remote-djay-pro-on-mac-or-ipad-extension-controller-machine-learning which definitely helped me out a lot.

I already have a subscription to djay Pro AI through my Apple ID. Will this carry over to the Mac version; or will I need to repurchase? Also; is it possible to sync my playlists and settings between the two devices easily?

Thanks in advance for your help and assistance.

Hi @lizaclarr,

  • Your djay subscription is cross platform and can be used on iOS, macOS, Windows and Android without any additional purchase.
  • Both apps are very similar, however the iPad version is optimized for the smaller screen and touchscreen controls. Please note that currently Macs do not support touchscreen control so this will likely be the main difference you will notice.
  • The transition should be pretty easy with minimal learning curve. Most of the controls are the same and will feel familiar.
  • As far as performance goes, it really depends on what MacBook you buy and what iPad you currently have. I have an M4 iPad Pro and it performs better than my previous MacBook Air M1. So, as long as you are purchasing a newer Apple device, performance should be excellent on either platform.
  • I recommend that you go to an Apple Store and ask to demo djay on a newer iPad and MacBook. Most stores I’ve been to have the free demo version of djay already installed.
  • Finally, the following is my personal opinion as a longtime DJ. I prefer DJing with an iPad because of the touchscreen, and I feel it is a simpler, more compact device. I think it comes down to personal preference and some people will naturally like one device more. I spent many years DJing with a laptop, but after switching to an iPad over 5 years ago, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to a laptop. I hope that helps!

I concur. iPad for me just works better. Love the touch screen. Each to their own. I have iPad Pro 12.9 5 edition which is M1 chip I believe. Runs djay at 100%. When it stops running at 100% and I like the newer upgrades I’ll upgrade my iPad but for now and probably a while yet it works great. I would say iPad and iPhone that have the sufficient power work better than Mac, windows etc. Just seem more powerful, as I think with iPhone you can go back to an iPhone 12 and still run at 100%. Just my 2 cents. With my eyes I need iPad now though.
