Hi Algoriddim team,
I’d like to suggest an improvement for the official DDJ-FLX4 integration.
It is about preserving the muscle memory that many DJs have developed using Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta hardware over the years with Beat FX LEVEL/DEPTH response.
On Pioneer DJ mixers and controllers, the Beat FX LEVEL/DEPTH knob has a very recognizable and intuitive feel. With effects such as Echo, the maximum usable effect is reached around the 12 o’clock position, making quick and consistent effect transitions feel very natural.
With the official DDJ-FLX4 mapping in djay, the LEVEL/DEPTH knob appears to behave almost linearly:
-
fully left = minimum effect
-
12 o’clock ≈ half of the available range
-
fully right = maximum effect
As a result, common Beat FX gestures require a much larger knob movement than expected. For DJs who regularly use Pioneer DJ hardware, this breaks years of muscle memory and makes Beat FX feel less natural, even though the controller itself is the same.
I’m not requesting new effects or different Beat FX. Instead, I’m suggesting that the official DDJ-FLX4 profile could use a response curve that better reflects the intended behavior of Pioneer DJ hardware.
Ideally:
-
the LEVEL/DEPTH knob would reach its maximum usable Echo amount around the 12 o’clock position;
-
the overall response would feel consistent with the way Pioneer DJ hardware is designed to be operated.
I noticed that the official DDJ-FLX10 integration already feels much closer to the expected Pioneer hardware behavior, which suggests that controller-specific tuning is possible.
Applying the same philosophy to the DDJ-FLX4 would greatly improve the experience for Pioneer users while preserving the familiar workflow that the hardware was designed around.
Thank you for considering this suggestion.
