Not sure if this is a question or a bug, but hopefully there is a fix somehow/somewhere down the road. I’m a long time user of the Prime 4, and when I plugged in (USB and 1/8 - ext headpone), I choose internal mixer and headphone out - all is well goes to the appropriate channel. BUT when I have setup the Prime 4 source to “computer”, suddenly things go wrong. If I choose internal mixer with External Headphones, it still goes to channel 1 & 2 without going to the main, unless I turn up channel 3 (which is where external headphone cable is feeding). I would think that it’s just the way it is, and it is because I have the Prime 4 source set to computer, but MegaSeg has no problem with doing what I explained above. None at all… so I’m wondering if MegaSeg can do it, shouldn’t DJay also be able?
To answer why I’d want to do this, I’m using the automix feature of DJay through channel 3 for cocktail/dinner before mixing with Serato on 1 & 2. Again, MegaSeg does this, but I’d prefer to switch DJay as a standard.
Hi @Darrell, thanks for the details about your setup and the issue - this is very helpful! Can you please share a screenshot of your djay Settings>Audio Devices with your Prime 4 connected? Thanks!
. It’s like it still wants to feed Decks 1 & 2, but then send that output to Deck 3 (channel 3) via the headphone cable. Weird. Again, only happens when the Prime 4 source is set to computer.
Thanks @Darrell, if you’d like to share the video, please upload it to your Google Drive/Dropbox, enable sharing permissions, then share a link to the video here? Thanks!
Hi @Darrell, sorry for the delayed response. Most of our engineering team was off for the holidays, and I don’t have access to a Prime 4 at the moment. The team has reviewed your question and the video. However, we’re not sure if we understand the issue correctly. What are you trying to achieve exactly? Where are your headphones plugged into?
Setting Main Output to external headphones should result in the Master Audio signal being sent to the headphone jack of the MacBook. Please also note, that the Pre-Cueing signal may be sent elsewhere depending on what you chose (cant see it in the screenshot). Is there a reason that you are not setting the Main Output to the Prime 4 ch1-ch2 and the Pre-Cueing to the Prime 4 ch3-ch4? Thanks!
Hey Slak_Jaw - As you saw/see in the video my Main Output is set to external headphones and it does send audio to the external headphone jack of the MacBook Pro. And yes, I understand Pre-Cueing signal is different.
On the Prime 4, you can leave it as is (running Engine DJ), OR set the “source” to be “computer” (where it basically restarts), after which, if you are running Serato, then the Prime 4 will control Serato.
Here’s the issue - if the Prime 4 is left as is, the output works perfectly fine. But if you set the source to “computer”, then it gets weird. The audio level suddenly shows up on Channel 1 on the Prime 4, but raising the fader on channel 1 does nothing UNLESS channel 3 is turned up. Almost as if channel 1 suddenly routes to channel 3 (where the external headphone cable feeds).
It seems that Djay still wants to hang on to the USB-C connection, after selecting the main output to be “headphones”. The only reason I’m bringing this up is because MegaSeg is able to work with the external headphone port, wether the Denon Prime 4 is in standalone, or in external computer control, so I thought Djay has to be able to do the same… right?
I forgot to answer you last question: the reason I am not setting the Main Output to Prime ch1-ch2, is because I want to use Djay for cocktail hour and/or dinner sets with weddings, and then switch to Serato for the dancing portion. So I boot up the Prime 4 and set the source to USB/Computer, and start Serato - and that’s when Djay seems to work, but won’t let go of the USB connection.
When in computer mode, the channels on the Prime 4 that aren’t set to line inputs do not process audio.
a. They just remote control whatever software is attached over USB.
b. Even if you set the Main Out in djay to use the headphone jack, as long as a Prime 4 is attached via USB you will control djay with channels 1 and 2 on it.
c. This can not be switched off, djay will always recognize and activate any controller connected.
The reason this works differently when using MegaSeg is because that software doesn’t actually support the Prime 4, so it essentially ignores it.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking. MegaSeg shows the Prime 4 as an audio source, but it doesn’t allow control like Djay does. It makes sense. Thanks for digging into though!
