Disabled DJs? (My Story)

Hi Guys. This is my story of how I became a quadriplegic DJ.

It is probably a long shot, but I would like to know if there are any other DJs with motor disabilities in here?

In 2019, I had a mountain bike accident that left me quadriplegic, that is, with absolutely no movement in my arms or legs. And as anyone can imagine, this is a life-changing injury. By pure chance, as soon as I was let go from the ICU (90 days), one of the videos I had uploaded right before my accident became viral, and my YouTube channel started to grow, so I took notice and knew I had to do something…monetize. Between 2019 and 2023, with the use of a cephalic mouse (it uses gyroscopic sensors and Bluetooth on a small device that I wear on my head), I had the opportunity to learn how to manage, produce, and edit everything for my YouTube Channel (Mountain Bike POV videos) and so I helped it grow from 1,000 to the 425,000 subscribers I have today. This meant that I had to learn the skills needed to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro, AA, Photoshop, and Illustrator, plus learning strategies involving YouTube channel growth, etc., all using the head-mouse. With all this knowledge and practice, I became very precise and fast using my mouse. So after my YouTube channel plateaued in 2022/2023 and it became less practical as I could no longer feed it with new material every week/month, I started to think about my old passion from 2001, DJing.

Here comes the second part. Starting in 2023, I started to think about the possibility of re-learning a skill that I had used back in the day when I had a reggae bar back in 2001. In my head, I thought this was impossible, especially to do it professionally in clubs, bars, events, etc. But I did some research, and saw one guy, just like me, being an EDM DJ in Amsterdam, if he can do it, I can do it and started the process. Fast forward to today, while still in the process of learning every day, practicing every day… I can say I have been hired as a DJ at different events, clubs, bars, restaurants, etc. I also have a SoundCloud and YouTube channel dedicated to my DJ profile, Pato Selekta. Some of my remixes and mashup have been somewhat successful in these two music platforms with 30k-40k views.

Third; software and why I am here. Well, I cannot use a controller, so I rely 100% on the usability and UI capabilities of a good DJ software on a laptop. At the moment, I have a MacBook Pro M2 Max 64 GB and 2 TB SSD, very powerful stuff, very! I’ve paired this computing power with Virtual DJ, which I believe has a great UI, Video output options, good STEMS but, more importantly, the possibility to script/program and assign those sequences to keyboard shortcuts. Using Apple’s accessibility options, I have created a “custom panel” or keyboard which deploys when I launch Virtual DJ.

As DJ platforms evolve and become more intelligent, they have indirectly helped people like dare to become DJs as we can leverage on things like Neural Mixing and smart beat gridding, to be creative and have a chance against “normal” DJs. DJay Pro is the king regarding these last two points, and in addition, it has the potential to program a keyboard like the one I have with VDJ and with DJay Pro’s awesome effects, which I think are the best in the industry, I could be a better disabled DJ. Finally, I have not converted yet, why?: one, I have not been able to transfer correctly my playlists and tracks with all my cue-points, which I know it can be done (somehow); and secondly, because I do many mash-ups and remixes, and the lack of a key compatibility “traffic-light” system is a dealbreaker in order to commit 100% to DJay Pro.

Anyway, I’ll be here participating in the community and If anyone has any questions or suggestions, feel free to ask or comment.

i watched the video you linked… that type of mountain bike riding is heLLa scary
i’ve had my share of falls… but dang thats a crazy sport

glad you are of a cheerful spirit!

if you have the same drive, to do what you did before the accident… you will find your niche in DJ’ing again!!

i dont have any tips, or suggestions… but if you ever look toward integrating various softwares albeit plugins to compliment your DJ’ing rig… or even looking at alternative methods of monitoring your audio, there are alternate controllers and hardware that i have come across that can assist

Let us know your hardware setup and what challenges you might be encountering?
secondly… what do you envisage in your climb of this new hill you are desiring to conquer!?

Hey 7nz. The only other hardware I use apart from my MacBook Pro is a Volt 476 sound card that I use to connect my laptop to controllers and mixers. I also use some VST’s but mostly when doing mashups. Djay Pro does have a lot of integrated effects power which I think can help me concentrate on the creative side and reduces the need to use plugins etc.

My goal is to be a competitive DJ to some level. Because of my cultural background, my niche is on the dancehall /afro/Caribbean riddims, but there’s a lot of market for that kind of music here in Colombia. So yeah, I want to be able to play at big events nationwide to some level. I’m truly passionate about this venture.

Hi @Pato_Selekta, thanks for sharing your story. Regarding converting your existing VDJ library and hot cues over to djay, there are 3rd party apps like DJ Conversion Utility. Also, there’s a suggestion topic to add VDJ to our new External Apps source if you’d like to go vote for that. I hope that helps!

i agree with your comment on the 2 top DJ applications, VDJ & Djay pro… they both have their unique strengths… which do compliment one another if used in conjunction via the ableton link

i wondered if you have used the application xGestures??
it allow you to use mouse movements with a modifier… ie hold left mousebutton + move mouse down&left, and it will execute a command/applescript or keyboard presses etc

you may get some additional milage on your mouse controls… just a thought
heres a video of the application

i noticed you posted something about VDJing, in another thread

im not sure if you are aware of the application called “magic music visuals”
there is a free version to trial everything but essentially you can create your own visuals… and have the separate audio channels respond to the visuals…
and given that you can have up to 64 virtual audio channels on the mac with blackhole64 this allows for alot of experimentation if using virtualDJ + DjayPro + Reaper in conjuction with one another

also with your 64gb of memory on your m2 it will give you alot of headroom to manipulate visuals and audio in ways that are only limited by your imagination!

i created these 2 demo’s using the trial version of “magic music visual”… i was unable to save the project as that is the limitation imposed on the trial version… but its worth looking into if it interests you?
heres a link to user made visuals, that use the application
https://magicmusicvisuals.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=946e1b9d70c99def3e4e35de52a8ca05

heres the 2 demos i put together

btw all visuals can be manipulated in realtime… with a standard midi controller
something like a korg nano Kontrol studio controller would easily pair using bluetooth on the mac… to control either music or visuals in realtime

i use the Kontrol studio, with my ipad to control djay pro as well… excellent portable controller imho

Cool! Didn’t know, lot of potential. I’ll definitely see what I can do. Thanks.

Cool, didn’t know this one existed either. Personalized visuals that react to audio is what every VJ needs.

I’ve learned how to use after effects were I apply audio keying effects to induce movements in different layers, shapes, etc. Many of my YouTube mashup and remix visializers have them.
