YOUR QUESTION:

  1. It’s been 2 weeks now that my djay pro lags when I try to load songs. My usb is at 65% of it capacity. Can it be the cause? Before, everything was good and fluid. I don’t know if I need to blame my USB ? I just want to get it back to normal. Could you help ? Thanks

Weird question, tbh, @Lucas_Turcotte …
Who can better know whether your USB drive is the culprit than yourself, by just testing what happens when moving some songs to your hard drive and see if you are back to normal speed with direct access. Or did I misunderstand something ?

Btw, if it is about USB-C, have you tried reversing it (upside down) ? It is said some cheaper USB-C cables/connectors work faster on one side (up or down), as USB-C is actually not 100% symmetrical, except for higher quality cables/connectors. Never tested this myself, but there is some literature about this (globally about USB-C charging and transfer speed, not specifically about DJ use). More generally, it can be a cable issue (unfortunately USB-C is not exactly a standard - lots of differences among cables). Some free software allow to test your cables (can’t provide a reference, tho. Not an expert - but I know it this exists and is increasingly popular - because of the lack of standard among USB-C).

Hi @Lucas_Turcotte, thanks for the setup details an info. A drive sitting at 65% full isn’t a documented cause of slow track loading, so I wouldn’t pin it on capacity alone. The two things that are documented as affecting external drives on macOS are Spotlight indexing the drive after you plug it in (disk activity spikes until it finishes), and unstable USB connections — cable, hub, or port.

@Davidv100 is right that the fastest way to settle it is to test: copy five or six tracks to your Mac’s internal drive, load them from there, and see if the lag disappears. If it does, it’s likely the drive or its connection. If it doesn’t, the drive is off the hook and we’ll look at the app side.

A few things that would help me narrow it down:

  1. Which macOS version are you on, and which Mac is it (MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini)?

  2. Does the lag happen with all tracks, or only ones on the USB drive — for example, do streaming or djay Music tracks load normally?

  3. Anything change around the time this started two weeks ago — a macOS update, a djay update, new drive, new cable?

While you’re testing, try connecting the drive directly to the Mac rather than through a hub or through the FLX10, and give Spotlight a few minutes to settle after plugging in before you start loading. I hope that helps!
