Remote works perfectly when I’m at home in my own wfi network. The connection fails when I’m connected through another network. What could be the problem?

Maybe the Wi-Fi connection (signal) is too weak. In this case, you can just create a local Wi-Fi network between your Mac and your iPhone: go to Airport menu > Create Network…
Then join this network on your iPod through Settings > Network.
