Explorer tags randomly missing

Device model: HP Laptop
Version of operating system: Windows 11 24H2
Version of djay: 5.2.11033

Summary of the issue: Explorer does not display fields/tags for songs randomly

How to reproduce the issue:
In Explorer, I’m displaying Title, Artist, Genre, Time, BPM, Key, Year and Bit Rate columns. When I add a local folder with more than about 20 mp3 files, some songs in the list will display the filename instead of Title, all other fields will be empty and Bit Rate will show Unknown. The more files there are in the folder I’m adding, the more songs will have missing fields. If I remove and add the same folder again, the songs with missing fields can be different, so it’s random.

Needless to say that all these files have correct tags when using other tools.

I woudl first check, that the files aren’t corrupted.
Some tools can handle issues better if there are errors in the file.

I’ll look into that and report back, thanks.

So, I used MP3 Diags tool to correct some issues with the files but the Explorer issue remains. I’ll say it again, each time I add the same folder, different songs will show with all tags missing. So it can’t be due to a corrupted file, since a file sometimes shows fine and sometimes not.

I believe this is a bug which should be looked into.

BTW thanks @dj_romy_fi for suggesting these tools. It really opened my eyes.

Hi @Apos,

Thank you for sharing this issue with us, and we are sorry to hear that you’ve experienced this.

While we have not been able to reproduce this issue just yet, please note that we are still looking into this.

In the meantime, could you update to the latest version in the app store that was released a few days ago and let us know if the tag issue is still occurring?

Thanks!

Hi @NathanielAlgo ,

I updated to 5.2.11173.0 but the issue still remains.

Thanks.

Updated to 5.2.11228.0, issue still exists.

Updated to 5.3.3033.0, issue still exists.

Hi @Apos,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention again.

Sorry to hear that this issue is still occurring for you.

If there are any additional details you can share with us that may be useful please do.

Thank you again and have a nice day.

@Apos you are not alone. I just started trying to use local files and am seeing something similar where it is just the artist that is not displayed. In my case, the artist might appear initially and then disappear after I use the file. Using search for that artist will not show any related files but searching by title or album does.

@NathanielAlgo hopefully now that you have a related issue from another user your team can have a deeper look. This bug will ultimately make DJ Pro useless if I decide to depend on local files more than I do today.

Thanks!

Let me share some more info on this.

I’m also using iTunes playlists in Djay. Since I’m only using local files, the iTunes playlists also point to mp3 files in the same Windows filesystem. In Djay library browser, iTunes playlists are always showing all tags for all songs and I can also add songs from an iTunes playlist to a Djay playlist without any tags go missing. This happens only when I’m adding Explorer type folders in the library browser.

Hi @jwg1963 @Apos,

Thank you for sharing these updates with us.

We’ve sent this over to engineering and are awaiting further review.

In the mean time please let us know of any updates you may find that would help us in our investigation.

Thank you for your patience!

A little more info.

  1. Load a new directory in “My Files”. All metadata from the RIFF or id3tag shows up in “My File” view.

image

  1. Load song into a Deck. All metadata displayed within the deck.

3a) Start song on deck. All metadata disappears from “My File” view and title is replaced with the filename.

image

3b) Deck changes to filename only.

Nothing done after that (closing app, etc) brings the metadata back.

I have recreated this with an mp3 purchased file directly downloaded from Amazon Music (nothing else touched it prior to DJ Pro opening it), WAV files tagged with Mp3tag, and tags written by Nero CD Ripper from the Microsoft store. It does not appear DJ Pro wrote any new information to the file as the modified date/time did not change.

The OS environment is Windows 11 on two different computers with very little common software other than DJ Pro, Chrome, etc. so I am pretty sure that your engineering team should be able to recreate this on demand with a stock Windows 11 install. If not, please let me know and I will try and do a little more digging. In the meantime, since there is no way to force/update metadata in DJ Pro itself you should consider that local file management is unusable on Windows 11 as a minimum.

I would love to hear from other Windows 11 users if any stumble across this post to know if you have local files working and what your setup is.
