External Drive disconnected reconnected accidentally

Question:
If on a set with an external drive and the drive accidentally disconnects, the music stops of course after a few seconds.
The question is: does the track and the rest of the playlist/library recover once drive reconnects with djay open and deck unchanged?
That’s how it works in serato, but in djay i always have to quit and relaunch djay after drive reconnects, only then the library works again. If I don’t quit, none of the tracks work (loads but without sound nor waveform, just track info and cue points show on a blank line

In another scenario, if i launch djay before I insert my drive, nothing works too (all tracks remain greyed out even after drive has successfully connected.

Is this the behaviour everybody experiences or it’s just my mac?

Drive Connected - song playing on deck 1

Disconnected, song lost sound and waveform after 10 second. Reconnected drive and re-loaded same song, nothing on deck other than this

Hi @Armigo, thanks for the detailed info. I tested this on my Mac and did not experience the same issue. Unplugging the drive resulted in the currently playing song to continue for another 20-30 seconds before stopping. Plugging the drive back in allowed me to continue playing from that playlist without having to reboot djay. So, it seems this could be something specific to your setup. I hope that helps!

EDIT: I was able to replicate your second observation where the drive needs to be connected before launching djay.

Hello! It’s been more than a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!

Hi @Slak_Jaw Apologies: been a long time away from this post.

I wish to request you to revisit this behaviour once more. I tested on 3 different intel macs and same result: unplugging and replugging external SSD while gigging with djay breaks the djay library completely until djay is relaunched. No single track loads. In the same way, plugging a drive with djay open does not load library for use - all tracks remain greyed (you observed this already). What mac did you test on?

In the video below, I used a test 60GB Samsung USB thumb drive with just 5 freshly downloaded video tracks (mp4, H264), and created a playlist “TEST PLAY” in my collection. Check what happens as I unplugged and replugged it in.

These 2 behaviours are unpleasant for 2 reasons:

  1. It is common for drives to accidentally disconnect during gigs, most notably USB-C cables as they tend to be alot more prone. Once it reconnects, playback should continue as usual (from wherever the playhead is). This shortens up the anxious waiting time compared to additionally having to re-launch djay (which btw, can take a lot longer to open during such gig hours when the mac is "heated up"and everybody is anxious.
  2. When swapping dj’s on the same laptop, both dj’s using djay, wouldn’t it be nice for the 2nd dj to enjoy a hot swap? That is: to just plug his drive onto the mac without having to stop music, quit and relaunch djay?

If these reasons sound compelling enough, and if this is a behaviour you can reproduce, I wish to request this be listed as a bug report, so developers can take a 2nd look at it to decide if it can be fixed.

Thanks

Hi @Armigo, thanks for the additional info and video - this is very helpful. I’m still not able to reproduce this on my M4 MBAir, so I’m going to pass this onto our team to see if they can on any Intel-Based Macs. I’ll report back when I have news. Thanks!
