External keyboard + Caps Lock - Issue with Shortcuts

YOUR QUESTION:

  1. When using the Magic Keyboard with Caps Lock on, Djay Pro stops responding to the arrow keys used to load tracks onto the deck, and the space bar fails to trigger playback; everything only starts working again after I turn Caps Lock off. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

sounds like it’s sending a midi signal that switches the default keyboard shortcut in djay settings. While ON and acting up, toggle “Enable keyboard shortcut” on and off, or swap the setting from Open Format DJ to Default, and see if that resolves it

Thanks for the suggestion @Armigo

Hello! It’s been a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!

Could you make a video on how to do this part, please?

try those settings when connected/misbehaving.

Nice! Thanks again @Armigo

Thanks for your help, but in my case—an iPad Pro—this option isn’t available.

Hi @MarcosAraujo, on iPad, Caps Lock is a system-level language switch by default, which may be what’s intercepting the key input. Try turning it off in iPadOS: Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > Switch Languages using Caps Lock (off). If that switch isn’t there, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and remove any extra language keyboards so only your main one remains.

Could you also fill in your iPadOS version and djay version? That’ll help narrow it down if the above doesn’t do it. Thanks!

As I show in the video, even after following the steps you mentioned, it still didn’t work with Caps Lock on—it’s really strange. IpadPRO M5 IOS 26.6

Thanks for the video @MarcosAraujo, that clears a lot up. First, my apologies — the toggle I pointed you to isn’t on your screen because you only have one language keyboard installed (Português (Brasil) plus Emoji). That switch only appears once two or more language keyboards are added, so language switching isn’t what’s happening here.

Second, there’s a workaround you can use right now. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys > Caps Lock Key and set it to No Action. Caps Lock then does nothing at all, so it can’t get stuck on in the middle of a set.

One last favour before I write this up: could you shoot a short clip with the keyboard itself in frame, so we can see the Caps Lock light while you’re pressing the keys? In this video the screen never shows which keys are being hit, and I want to be sure the freeze lines up with Caps Lock and not with the “Video Track Detected” dialog that appeared just before the list stopped responding. Thanks for your patience with this one!

I followed the steps shown in the video I’ve attached here; however, the goal isn’t to disable the button—even though disabling it does work, doing so means I lose the uppercase letter function.

Search in djay is not case-sensitive. Caps lock not needed

Hi again @MarcosAraujo, that’s exactly the video I needed - thanks! It shows the failure cleanly: Caps Lock light on at 0:12, spacebar pressed, deck sits paused at -00:11 and doesn’t budge. Light off at 0:16, and playback fires right away.

You’re right that disabling the key isn’t a real fix. That was only ever meant as a stopgap so you could keep working in the meantime, not the answer. Feel free to set it back if you want. For what it’s worth, Shift still gives you uppercase either way, so it’s only the sustained caps you’d lose while it’s off.

Just a few more things before I report this to engineering for further review:

  1. What’s your exact djay version #?
  2. Does the same freeze occur on a second iPad or with a different keyboard, if you have access to either?
  3. Do you recall needing to restart djay to recover, as in your original post, or has it always been just toggling Caps Lock off?

Thanks again!

I’m going to test it with another keyboard and try it on a different iPad—though if I recall correctly, it didn’t work on another iPad either, back when I had the 11th-generation model. But I’ll look into it further and get back to you.

Sounds good. Thanks @MarcosAraujo

Here is the video showing the use of an external keyboard, yet DjayPro still freezes.

Sorry for the delayed reply @MarcosAraujo. That video settles it - completely different keyboard, wired USB, same behaviour. So it isn’t the Magic Keyboard. That was the piece I needed to rule out before filing.

If you could please provide your djay version at the bottom of Dashboard > Settings, that will help with the accuracy of my report to engineering. Really appreciate the effort you’ve put into these three videos, it made the difference. Thanks!

Version 5.6.8 I discovered by chance that the keyboard’s Play function works even with Caps Lock on; it would be amazing if there were a way to configure the spacebar for this function.

Thanks @MarcosAraujo, I’ll pass this onto our engineering team.
