External Mixer Mode not routing correctly on iPad Pro M4

Message:
I’m using djay Pro AI (latest version, subscription) on an iPad Pro M4 with iPadOS [latest]. In External Mixer Mode, Deck 1 is set to outputs 1/2 and Deck 2 to outputs 3/4, connected to an Allen & Heath Xone:32.

Tested with three different audio interfaces (MOTU M4, Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4th Gen, Audient EVO 8). In every case, Deck 2 audio (outputs 3/4) is either silent or mirrors Deck 1. Cabling and settings are correct.

This makes External Mixer Mode unusable. Is this a known issue with iPadOS or djay Pro’s multichannel routing? Any fixes or maybe I am missing something?

Thank you.

Hi all,

I’m having trouble getting djay Pro AI on my iPad Pro (M4, latest iPadOS) to work properly in External Mixer Mode with my Allen & Heath Xone:32.

I’ve tested three different class-compliant audio interfaces:

MOTU M4

Audient EVO 8

Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 (4th Gen)

In all cases, the problem is the same:

Deck 1 and Deck 2 are correctly assigned in djay (Deck 1 → Outputs 1/2, Deck 2 → Outputs 3/4).

Cabling is correct into separate mixer channels.

But either only one deck plays on both channels, or Deck 2 (outputs 3/4) is silent.

I’ve tried different USB-C hubs (powered and unpowered), restarting the iPad, reconnecting devices in different orders, and resetting djay’s audio settings. Nothing fixes it.

From what I’ve read, the EVO 8 may not be fully class-compliant on iOS (so that one I can understand), but I’m surprised the MOTU M4 and Scarlett 4i4 both fail in the same way, since they’re widely used with iPads.

Is this a known iPadOS or djay Pro compatibility issue with multichannel outputs in External Mixer Mode? Any advice or confirmed workarounds would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @Sdg368, thanks for the details about your setup and the issue.

  1. Can you please screenshots of your Audio Devices settings?
  2. Also, some photos of how exactly you are connecting everything to your iPad?

This is what I normally recommend when connecting to iPad:

  1. Disconnect all cables and adapters from your iPad and DJ hardware.
  2. Close djay.
  3. Perform a Forced Restart of your iPad.
  4. After restarting, connect your powered USB-C hub to your iPad and confirm there is a blue peripheral icon in the top right of your iPad screen.
  5. Connect your original Apple charger and cable to the USB-C hub and confirm that your iPad is charging. 6. Connect your DJ hardware to the USB hub using a high-quality USB cable (ideally with dual ferrites on either end).
  6. Confirm that your DJ hardware powers up. If your hardware has its own power supply, please connect it as well to not rely entirely on USB bus power.
  7. Launch djay.
  8. Open the djay Settings>Audio Devices and confirm that your hardware is shown.
  9. If not, scroll down to the bottom and press Reset to Defaults.
  10. If this doesn’t work, unplug the USB cable from your hardware for a second then plug it back in.
  11. If this doesn’t work, try a different USB cable.

Good morning Buddy,

First of all, thank you so much for your suggestions. I feel truly privileged to have received a direct reply from you — Algoriddim has reached another level and I love it even more now. You guys absolutely rock!

The good news is that I managed to resolve the issue. It turned out to be something very simple (almost embarrassing to admit). I tried everything you suggested without success, until I realized that on both my audio interfaces channels 1/2 weren’t outputting any sound. I thought that was impossible, so I exited DJ Pro, opened Spotify, and started adjusting knobs. That’s when I noticed that turning the main volume knob on the interface actually produced audio.

At first, with the Motu M4, my iPad wasn’t recognizing the main volume knob as a controller — the sound through iOS seemed static. Now it does, and by turning the volume to maximum, I get full sound on channels 1/2 while channels 3/4 retain their own output. Hopefully that makes sense, but I wanted to share the details.

I now have superb sound coming from both the Motu M4 and the A&H 32. Once again, thank you so much for your time and support!
