Suggestion: as I posted on other DJ software discord: You know how DJAY can shake things up? Get an intern to vibe code an XML / CSV wrangling utility for Win/Mac and release it for free to convert between Serato <–>Rekordbox <—>Algoriddim Djay <—>traktor…etc.
BPM , Hotcues (with notes) that’s a great start.
No paying for yet another conversion service like lexicon etc …
this will put DJAY front and center for DJs who will eventually want to explore.
Currently thanks to good old Internet Archive, I have that gem - rekordbuddy doing all the heavy lifting between Serato and Rekordbox (so I can use it in other VR VJ soft that supports rekordbox).
My main plea: implement support for DJay (on all platforms, but especially Meta) to parse either serato —the preferred format, or Rekordbox analysed tracks. it’s a bitch to have to go through crates of songs manually putting in hot-cues.
Yes I had to migrate my RB library to DjP on iPad and it took me over a week. Was Dj conversion utility. I wouldn’t wish that anxiety and pain on my worst enemy, it would help immensely even more mixed in key integration.
From what I’m witnessing it points (sadly) to Dj software companies making land grabs while the going is good, hoping they "win the race " ..rekordbox disabling 3rd party non pioneer hardware controllers…not writing Bpm to ID3 tags ..serato not having a mobile app.. DJay (sadly) not reading rekord box nor searto marked hot cues / tags.
It’s a slippery slope, but from experience I can tell you - counter to popular belief. It’s the “open” software that gets the most downloads — thereby competing in the same pond
..irrespective of the (usually unaffordable) “brand” name offerings
These Swiss army knives are what skilled masters of their trade depend on. Make DJay that.
@dirrogate have you not tried the new External Apps source in djay for macOS and Windows? This enables reading of Serato, Rekordbox and Traktor libraries. In most cases crates and hot cues are properly imported.
TBH, I haven’t considered it and was solely focused on VR djaying.
The only reason for venturing into rekordbox / serato is because both the top VR djaying apps - Djay and TribeXr have err…quirks. tribe only works with rekordbox sorted cues…rekordbox does not embed BPM in meta tags…so then looked at serato which is the only software nicely working with the DJ2GO2 Touch controller i got specifically for Djay on Meta, which does not yet have separate pre-cue working …an endless rabbit hole…
But, Let me look at it if there’s a trial. Good idea @Slak_Jaw
And I’m assuming those same DJPro crates will then seamlessly retain hotcues within the Meta version of the DJay app?
I understand. What I mean is if hot-cue points etc are imported from say Rekordbox / serato and converted to Djay format via the DJay PC app , then will those, if copied over in what ever dB/CSV format that Djay stores them, will they respect the hotcues in Djay for Quest?
I downloaded and uninstalled it twice. (Once after someone on the TribeXr forum said vanilla conversion is free) —it pissed me off that Lexicon is bordering on false advertising.
For context: I have a serato crate and chose to simply want to export it to RB format. the popup said this is a "paid standard feature "
one useful feature VDJ has that makes me consider switching over from DJAY is that you can export to USB in RB format.
This is useful as it let’s you do set prep in VDJ and then have your set on a USB stick to use on AT/pio gear when it’s time to play out, without having to go through the faff of 3rd party conversion software.
Additionally, you can have VDJ pre-split the stems so you have the stems on the USB too!
I’m biased to a certain extent, I’ll agree. it’s because Algoriddim have a risk appetite and are pioneering in spirit, on top of that.
My utopian wish is that DJ companies stop with this wall-garden approach which worked for Apple in the 2000s and build more with interoperability in mind.
I’d really like to see:
DJay Pro analysed songs; BPM, key, hot cues and playlists be exportable across ALL flavors of DJay Pro (hint: including Metaquest)
Djay Pro read RB XML and Serato crate and offer to convert to DJay Pro format
edit this point is moot as Slak_Jaw mentioned the external sources option in this thread.
Likewise export to these formats
Again, it’s not the 2000s anymore and those companies insecure about their offerings by wanting to build silos —will eventually lose out to GitHub projects. Mixxx anyone ?
Hello everyone. I work with VirtualDJ on Windows and with djay on Windows and iPad.
I’ve developed some utilities for Windows; one of them, VDJtoSerato, saves Hotcue and Loop information from the VirtualDJ database into the MP3 file itself (MP3 only) in Serato format. This allows it to be read by apps like djay, Serato, and VirtualDJ itself.
If you’d like to use it, it’s on my website. It’s completely free, and it’s been very useful for me—I use it all the time.
LXC is quite good with the library conversions and the conversion feature is free now. I also like the extra features that LXC adds for library management.
and the new “External Sources” feature of Djay also does the job for RB/SR/TR. Yet, LXC for full library conversion is very good IMO.
There should be a way for all flavors of DJay Pro to read it’s own format across platforms.
(I’m hoping for DJay on the MetaQuest to parse its own DJay Pro format playlists and hotcues/BPM/keys…) as coded for its versions for PC/iOS etc
I totally agree, the walls are high and convoluted , when I was getting into Djing the ecosystem was heartbreaking and if I wasn’t doing it professionally I would’ve left it out of spite cos it may made business sense in 2000 but Dj’s have to carry the weight now.
