How Do I Connect My DJ Controller to djay Pro on iPad?

Hey everyone,

I just got started with djay Pro on my iPad and I’m looking to connect a DJ controller for a better hands-on experience. I’ve heard it’s possible, but I’m not exactly sure what I need to get everything working smoothly.

Here are my questions:

  1. What types of controllers are compatible with djay Pro on iPad?
  2. Do I need a special cable or adapter to connect my controller?
  3. Are there any specific settings in the app I need to adjust once connected?
  4. Can I power both the iPad and the controller at the same time?

For reference, I’m using an iPad Air (M1 chip) with USB-C, and I’m considering buying the Pioneer DDJ-200 or Reloop Buddy**, unless someone has better suggestions.

Any help, tips, or setup advice from experienced users would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Hi @jessicashepherd, welcome to the Community! I added numbers to each of your questions for clarity. Please see my answers below:

  1. Here’s our full list of supported controllers on iOS (scroll to the bottom and make sure iOS is selected to see the full list): DJ Controllers, DJ Mixers and other DJ Accessories | Algoriddim
  2. Since your iPad uses USB-C, you should be able to connect to most hardware directly with a cable. Some new DJ controllers have USB-C ports so a high quality USB-C to C cable will work. However, most controllers still use USB-B ports. For these you will need a USB-C to B cable. I personally use the Chroma Cables from DJ TechTools as these are specifically designed for DJ use.
  3. The controllers listed above should be plug-and-play with djay on iOS.
  4. Some modern controllers with USB-C sockets can also charge the iPad when connected. Alternatively, you can use a powered USB-C Hub connected to your iPad and then connected to power with your original iPad charger. Then connect you controller to the USB-C Hub. If you decide to go this route, I can provide more detailed instructions.

Personally, I would recommend the Reloop Buddy over the DDJ-200 as this is a more modern device and developed in close collaboration between Reloop and Algoriddim. Also, you will be able to charge your iPad while connected to the Buddy without the need for a USB-C hub. I hope that helps!

I’ll suggest the Mixtour Pro controller - it’s more expensive, but the functionality, quality and sound are much better than Pioneer DDJ-200 or Reloop Buddy.
