The central rotary knob of the Reloop Mixon 8: Scrolling and Listening Combined?
The central rotary knob on the Reloop Mixon 8 is perfect for scrolling through playlists and tracks, isn’t it? That’s how it’s programmed by default…
But it’s also incredibly handy for quickly Pre-Cueing a track and fast-forwarding to get a sense of the song. Given its central position!!
==> So this Rotary knob seems ideally suited for both functions, don’t you think?
But… how do you use this rotary knob? Do you stick to the default settings? Or have you perhaps adjusted the MIDI mapping to combine track scrolling with Pre-Cueing?
And to the Algoriddim team: would it be possible to combine these two functions (scrolling and listening) under the same knob? For example, by differentiating between turning and pressing? It would be a fantastic addition to an already powerful controller!
I’m really curious to hear how others approach this and whether there are any creative solutions I might have overlooked. Share your experiences and ideas!
On my personal Mixon 8 Pro MIDI mapping, I have mapped SHIFT+Browse Push to Preview Selected Track. I’ve also mapped SHIFT+Time to Skip Backward Preview and Skip Forward Preview. I hope that helps.
Thanks for your response and for the workaround with the SHIFT+Browse Push! I’d like to expand on a few points and share my perspective:
Track Preview and Library Integration
Having the track preview option is a fantastic feature, but it’s such a pity that it cannot be seamlessly combined with the library section and selection function on the rotary button. (Let alone that scrolling back and forth with the rotart through the preview would be possible.) This integration would make the process much more intuitive and one-flow. For example, in Traktor, this was implemented effectively. One idea to consider: a time-based combination. For instance, a normal click could handle selection and moving to the next section, but if you press the rotary button for 2 seconds, it could switch to the second function—track preview and scroll back/forth. This would add flexibility with the use of only one button without complicating the interface.
Preview Playback Continuity
I’ve now mapped the rotary combined with the SHIFT button to preview a track, as you suggested (together with the forward/backward scrolling). However, I find it quite disappointing that the preview stops playing the moment I start scrolling to search for another track. It would be much smoother if the preview continued playing until a new track is selected, allowing DJs to keep their focus and flow uninterrupted.
MIDI Mapping Sharing
Lastly, as a side note, I think it’s a pity that MIDI mappings cannot be saved and shared among users within the platform. Other DJ platforms offer this functionality, and it’s a fantastic way to learn from each other, share improvements, and encourage creative workflows. It could really elevate the community and help everyone get the best out of their controllers.
It’s not entirely clear to me how to use or import this mapping. When I do, will this be in addition to my own settings, or will it override them completely or partially?
The MIDI mappings are stored in the djay folder on your device with the file extension *.djayMidiMapping. This file type can be uploaded directly to this Community. Just make sure it is not named exactly the same as your existing MIDI mappings or you may accidentally overwrite it.
On iOS, use the Files app and navigate to On My iPhone/iPad>djay.
On macOS it can be found in ~/Music>djay.
On Windows it can be found in %HOMEPATH%>Music>djay.
Simply copy the shared file into the location above.
Within djay, with your MIDI controller connected, you can then select select the MIDI Mapping file by navigating to the djay Settings>MIDI Devices>MIDI DEVICES>“Name of your Controller”>MIDI CONFIGURATION>“Name of you Mapping”.
Here you will find all of the compatible MIDI Mappings for the controller you have connected.
Hello! It’s been a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!
Hi, I just Seen this topic.
As I‘m a Mixon 8 Pro user, too, I thought I share my workflow with you.
I‘m mostly DJing open format, so it’s quite important for me to quickly listen to different tracks in my library.
Therefore I have mapped pushing the rotary to preview the selected track. With shift + headphone cue 1 it skips backward, with shift + headphone cue 2 it skips forward. Then set the skip duration to 8 or 16.
For me this has become quite handy. I have also mapped shift + headphone cue 4 to add the track to preparation list. I have just found later, that this is also pre mapped on the mixon to another button.
With shift and rotary I have the original rotary function.
By the way, I just realized today, that shift+jog wheel scrolls through the track in the deck! That’s very welcome. Somehow I have overseen this since a year…
Thanks a lot, @Criwo!
Great to get these helpful insights from you.
I just checked this, and indeed the Cue (PFL) Buttons are pretty ideal for all kinds of functions together with the Shift button.
By default, they were assigned to Tab FX BPM, but I’ve never really used (or had to use) that function. So it’s much better to assign them to something more useful that I use almost every two minutes!
Also, I assume that FX BPM is automatically determined most of the time by the BPM of the track that’s playing—or isn’t it, @Slak_Jaw?
Thanks to your suggestions, I have now mapped the following:
Shift + Browse Push: Preview selected track
(Scrolling through lists and libraries is also pretty important for me, so I left that for Rotary as the default )
Shift + Cue Channel 3: Remove from Preparation List
Shift + Cue Channel 4: Add to Preparation List
Shift + Cue Channel 1: Preview Backwards
Shift + Cue Channel 2: Preview Forwards
This workflow feels much more efficient already.
That said, I think it would be even more ideal if Algoriddim had implement situational/contextual or time-based functions. For example, the Rotary (Push)button could be multi-used to scroll through a playlist, then select a track, then preview it, and even quickly scroll through the track—all in one intuitive flow (I believe Traktor had this). Currently, having to use Shift repeatedly to call up secondary functions feels a bit cumbersome and could be improved.
By the way, I’m curious: where do you set the Skip Duration?
Thanks again for sharing your setup—it’s been really helpful!
Thanks, Slak_Jaw. I believe you described how to find these MIDI mapping file settings on an iPhone or iPad (including the screen image).
However, I managed to find them in the menu on a MacBook as well. They’re not located in the settings but rather in the upper menu (MIDI > Configure … > etc.).
I am at the phone right now, so can not look it up. But yes, skip duration sounds right.
I have also mapped that to shift+parameter buttons, like Slak Jaw posted above.
