Improving usability of "Related & Matching" tracks

Hey Big_Blender, this is great I was thinking the same thing!

Also it would be great if they can add key commands for selecting each option: Custom, Selected, Active, Deck1,2,3,4,

By assigning key commands to each option, you can instantly select items from the drop-down menu, avoiding the need to open and scroll manually.

What I love about the Match feature is that it gives you a different way of viewing your library—something playlists just can’t do. I use it all the time at home and love the results.
The only downside is having to constantly switch between the Match tab and the Info tab, then having to open a menu and scroll. Because of that, I rarely use it at gigs; I just leave it set to Match – Active Deck. Unfortunately, all the other options take too long to access when you’re under pressure.

Thanks!

Hi @Donn,

Yes, totally agree, adding key commands for those options would also be a great improvement.

Just like you, I also use the Match function a lot myself. It really helps to rediscover tracks in your collection and play more of those you usually overlook, which keeps sets fresh and surprising.

By the way, did you know that if you click the Match icon again, it refreshes the list and gives you new matches (as long as there are enough options)?

I really hope Algoriddim will put effort in improving the Related Tracks and Match functionality, as this is highly requested and will help a lot of DJs make surprisingly better choices for their track selection. And that’s what we’re all here for.

Thanks for the additional feedback @Donn

Unfortunately, clicking the Match icon again to refresh the list does not work on macOS… This would be a really interesting feature. EDIT: I tried again and discovered that it depends of the selected source. It has to be the Djay collection, it doesn’t work if I select “Local Files”.

There is so much room for improvement in the Related Tracks and Match features. Key matching is currently very basic and limited to adjacent keys. Having other options would also be welcome. I am attaching a table listing the possibilities offered by harmonic mixing. It would be great to have these suggestions directly in Djay.

This is great, @Chapalo!

I use a similar kind of cheat sheet myself, it’s super helpful, and honestly, this kind of thing should really be built into the software (like RB, VDJ, Traktor, or Serato already do).

It’s such an easy feature to automate, and there’s clearly a lot of demand for it. Yet here we as djay users are, still relying on something as analog as a cheat sheet to get by ?

Hopefully one day we’ll laugh about this :joy:.

If the day comes that djay implements this, I’d personally recommend using different colors to distinguish between the types of matches (perfect match, energy boost, energy drop, mood/scale change, diagonal.)

Talking about match, another thing: the BPM range they consider for a match is too broad. For example, going from 182 to 172 feels like too big a leap to me because it doesn’t sound good anymore.

Here you find the official match-criteria right now that @Slak_Jaw once did post me:

With algoriddim not being the most responsive to requests and suggestions I decided to created my own match playlists using djay’s filters. It takes about half an hour to make.
Not a solution I know but it is usable and helpful and works better than the current match feature.
Thanks for the chart @Chapalo. Think I’ll make an energy boost folder too.

I just want djay to offer automatic related tracks in the way that rekordbox does…keep a history of the 2 or 3 tracks played before or after the currently playing track and present that as an automatic list of related tracks, together with the related ones you’ve already created.

Thanks for the additional feedback @discoian

Would love to limit matching tracks to current playlist. Seems like an obvious and easy fix. This has been requested many times in many different ways. Add a checkbox to limit matching tracks to current playlist. No DJ wants to see suggested dubstep tracks while you’re mixing 70s classics!

I was actually about to create a new feature request thread for this exact issue.

The Match feature concept is great, but mixing genres makes it non-functional for real use. I skimmed through the previous comments and see we are pretty much on the same page, so I won’t repeat what’s already been said.

However, I want to emphasize my proposal: we need the ability to filter Match results by Genre, BPM, or Playlist.

Is there any update on this? This topic seems a bit forgotten @Slak_Jaw

Also, regarding the Match feature, I’ve noticed a behavior that feels more like a bug than a feature request. It concerns consistency:

  1. I have a track on Deck 1 → Match suggests a list of ~20 tracks (List A).
  2. I switch focus to Deck 2 → Match updates for that track. This is expected.
  3. However, if I switch focus back to Deck 1 (without changing the track), Match generates a completely different list than the first time.

Why does it do this? Since the source track hasn’t changed, the suggestions should remain identical. The current behavior feels random and makes the feature unreliable. It makes no sense for the results to shuffle just by clicking away and coming back.

Hi @Albert_Maro, thanks for the additional input and feedback. I have no news to share regarding this suggestion, but this topic has not been forgotten.

I recommend you create a separate topic for this and share a video of the behaviour.

As the OP of this clearly popular request for what is, in my opinion, a rather obvious basic need, it is disheartening to see more than two years pass without any action. The match feature is currently unusable for any half-serious DJ who has multiple genres in their collection. May I ask what level of feedback is required to result in a customer-driven enhancement?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts an out @djsteve. For more info on how suggestions and voting works, please refer to the linked topic below:

Dear Djay Team,

I have a suggestion to improve the matching feature in Djay Pro. It would be very useful to be able to search for matches within specific playlists or folders, and to have an option that considers the current playback settings of the track.
For example, if a song originally has 120 BPM but is currently playing at 128 BPM with a shifted key, the software could look for matching tracks based on these adjusted characteristics.

I hope this feature can be considered for future updates.
In the meantime, thank you very much for your great work!

Thanks for the suggestion @SIMSU_84. I’ve merged it with this existing one as I believe they are closely related. I will pass on your additional comments to the dev team for consideration. Thanks again!

Soooo…… customisable matching feature happening yet?? @algoriddim_algoriddi

Hi @LUCKYMONEY, welcome to the Community! We don’t have any news to share regarding this suggestion at the moment. In the meantime, please use the blue Vote button at the top left of this page so we can gauge user demand for this. Thanks!
