Is a High-End Gaming PC Overkill or Ideal?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about upgrading my setup for DJing with djay Pro AI, especially since I’m getting more into video mixing. I’m considering a high-end gaming PC, but I’m wondering if it’s necessary or if it would be overkill.

I know gaming PCs have powerful CPUs, GPUs, and plenty of RAM, which sounds great for handling the video effects and multiple tracks in djay Pro AI. But is all that power needed, or would a more mid-range PC be sufficient for smooth performance?

For context, I want to run video mixing, video effects, and live streaming without any hiccups. I’m not sure if the heavy specs of a gaming rig are going to make a noticeable difference, especially if I’m mostly focused on music.

What do you all think? Is a high-end gaming PC overkill, or would it be ideal for video mixing in djay Pro AI?

Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences!

Thanks!

Hi @leoarthur, welcome to the Community! I personally use a high end Windows gaming laptop with djay, but it’s certainly not necessary. It makes sense if you are also going to use it for gaming, or other graphics intensive applications like CAD and video editing as well. However, if you’re buying strictly for djay, I think it’s overkill. You might also want to consider a Windows ARM device. However, keep in mind that hardware support for these laptops is currently less extensive than regular Windows devices.

I also use a newer M series MacBook Air which was more affordable and more portable than my Windows gaming laptop and it runs djay like a dream. Our hardware support on macOS is also currently the most extensive of all platforms. My recommendation is usually to set yourself a budget then get the highest spec’d device within that budget so you can extend the timeframe between upgrades. I hope that helps!
