Library sync between devices

Hi Algoriddim

A feature that I believe has been requested from a lot of users and repeatedly suggested for many years is the synchronization of the library between different devices. Although your app is far ahead of its competitors in many ways, the lack of this functionality is a real dealbreaker when it comes to a seamless workflow between different devices. In another thread, you suggested how to manually copy your library from MacOS to iOS and vice versa.

I then tried a few different things. For example, I moved all my music files to a new folder in iCloud so that new files are always immediately available on all devices without having to manually copy the files to my iPhone, which works perfect. A small side effect: I have an additional backup of all my files.

For synchronizing playlists and other information from my collection, you recommended simply copying the djay media library file from the desired device to the other.

So I tried creating an alias for the djay media library file and also moving the original file to iCloud. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work on macOS, as a new library file is automatically created when opening djay. On iOS, however, aliases created on macOS don’t work at all, nor is there a way to create them in the Files app itself on iOS.

However, if djay for iOS and macOS offered the option to manually define the location of the djay media library file, this problem would be easily solved.

Since the djay media library file for iOS and macOS already has the same structure and can be moved 1:1 between devices, it would be easy to simply save the file to the cloud so that the MacBook and iPhone could access the same file and the library would always be identical. The way I see it, this would be a tiny adjustment that would bring enormous added value to all of us.

Thanks a lot for your feedback and consideration of this functionality for the future!

Cheers!

Interesting. I currently have my library locally in Apple music, but would love to have this in iCloud. As you describe it, it does sound like a simple adjustment.

Hi @KptnBlauba, welcome to the Community! Thanks for the suggestion. Interesting idea. I have forwarded this to the dev team for consideration. Thanks again!
