Loss of active deck selection functionality via crossfader in djay 5.3

Subject: Loss of active deck selection functionality via crossfader in djay 5.3

Since updating to djay Pro 5.3, I’ve noticed that while the improved “active deck selection” feature is a great addition, it also comes with some unintended downsides in my workflow using the Reloop Mixon 8 controller.

Previously, I used the crossfader not to actually crossfade audio, but as a visual tool to assign the active deck. This allowed me to preview and browse the “Matches” for the non-playing deck, helping me to already see the possible matches for the next track while the current one continued to play uninterrupted.

In version 5.3, this seems no longer possible. The ‘active deck’ status is now only assigned to the track in the deck is actually playing. As a result, I can no longer look ahead at the Matches for the silent deck.

Solution would be to hit that exclamation mark for the crossfader on the screen and restore the crossfader. But then arrises another problem.. using that crossfader does not only changes the active deck, but also switches the real audio output — even though the “XFADER Assign” switches below the channel faders are set to “THRU”.

My questions are:

  1. Was it an intentional decision to remove the ability for the crossfader to control the active deck without affecting audio?
  2. Why is the audio still switching even when both deck channels are set to “THRU”? Is that a Bug?
  3. Is there any way to restore the previous behavior, where the crossfader (hardware or software) could change the active deck without affecting the sound? (maybe by changing midi-settings?)

I really appreciate the improvements made in version 5.3, but this particular change has significantly impacted my workflow. I hope there’s a workaround or that this functionality can be reconsidered in a future update.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hi @DJ_Big_Blender, thanks for the info and video. Good questions. I’ve passed these onto the team to see if they can provide some insight. I’ll report back when I get a response.

Hi DJ_Big_Blender,

There’s a possible workaround (unfortunately not using the crossfader) but you’re still able to look ahead for Matches without interrupting the audio.

Have you tried using the Info List w the settings "Selected’ and ‘Related’ ? The list will update Matches according to what song is selected instead of what Deck is Active.

Hi @Donn,
Thanks for thinking along and offering that workaround — I really appreciate it! :folded_hands: I’m definitely familiar with the Info List using “Selected” and “Related,” and I do use it regularly. But it shows the manually set relations between tracks, not the automatically generated Matches, which i am talking about here.

That’s why being able to assign the active deck independently of audio output was so useful — it allowed me to preview those automatic Matches for the non-playing deck without interfering with the live audio.

Still hoping there will come a future update that brings back this flexibility. Thanks again!

And did you already see these, @Donn?

They’re also about to make Related Tracks more intuitive and easier to use. Please consider voting for them using the Voting box in the upper left — but only if you like the ideas!
