I was using Djay Pro this weekend, but I noticed the output volume was significantly lower compared to Serato. In Serato, the sound had more punch, and I could keep the mixer volume at the middle, while in Djay Pro, I had to turn the mixer volume all the way up, and it still wasn’t as loud.
Here are my current Djay Pro settings:
Audio Limiter: On
Audio Gain: Checked
Output Headroom: Set to -6
I tried setting the output headroom to “None,” but there was no major improvement.
Is there a way to increase the output volume directly in the app? I was using the Pioneer SRT-1000 with a MacBook Pro (Apple M3 Pro chip).
Got it. Then I would try my other suggestions. I’ve also asked the engineering team to have a look at that specific hardware. I’ll report back when I have news.
Hi again @SimpleSimon, I checked in with our engineering team on this as well. When setting headroom to 0db, there is no significant difference between djay and Serato (we used autogain in Serato set to default and also in djay). Here are some things to keep in mind:
Auto gain: might reduce the channels volume, if the loaded track is a very loud one
Limiter: might kill volume if you try to max out djays volume
Headroom: reduces volume
If the you still have issues, can you please try to capture a short video that clearly shows the issue and also screenshots from settings? You can share the screenshots here directly, but the video needs to be uploaded to your Google Drive/Dropbox (enable sharing permissions) and the link shared here. I hope that helps!
Hello! It’s been more than a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!
hello, new djay user here. playing around and even do gigs with djay pro for almost a month now (i’m serato and rekordbox user). djay pro connected to pioneer djm a9, and cdj 3000 on HID mode. i can confirm that there is a noticeably volume level / loudness difference between serato and djay when auto gain is ON. serato auto gain set at recommended (+92db).
i’m testing with this method, same song, serato on the left, djay on the right, set chanel gain on a9 mixer to the max of vu meter under first red line on both, volume level of the songs are supposed to be the same or close right? but no, there’s a noticeably difference in loudness, djay is lower compared to serato.
i really hope there’s a work around for this, maybe add +2db on djay autogain algorithm, or maybe a separate master volume like serato?
i love djay pro so far, and want to continue using it. but with this volume level difference, its hard to play back2back with other djs using other software at my work place. not to mention the volume difference djay pro compared with other djs with usb sticks.
ps : sorry for my bad english, english is not my first language but i hope you understand my point. thanks.
I have noticed something along the same lines. I have an AKAI AMX and I do notice the vu on my controller seem to peak at lower volumes in djay than serato. I don’t think it’s enough considering the gigs I run but it does make me question whether I trust my controller or software clipping.
Hi @holzakontra, welcome to the Community! Adding +db options to the Headroom Settings has recently been suggested in other threads. The dev team is already looking into options for an upcoming release (likely 5.4.2). Thanks!
These new settings will just lead to clipping or triggering the limiter, though, right?
So you’re sacrificing sound quality for volume.
Much better to add gain in the analogue domain somewhere after the signal comes out of your soundcard. I suspect that 90% of the time, DJay Pro users are connecting their controller/soundcard to another mixer, so just turn it up there. That way you get more volume but maintain a nice clean signal.
Interesting. I played around with this earlier. I had 2 laptops. One plugged into A, the other B. Laptop A was djay pro, B sdjpro. With djay pro output headroom set to “none,” djay pro was a tad louder than sdj. When I set output headroom to -6db, sdj was a tad louder. If I had to guess, if djay pro had a -3db I would assume they would then sound exact.
What I found most interesting, were the meters on the mixer. With djay pro set to -6b, the meters matched that of sdjpro. The gain/trim were set identical of course. Sdjpro was definitely a little louder despite the led’s both being in the green. When I set djay pro output headroom back to “none” the leds went into the first yellow, and sounded a little louder, although not by much. I propose a -3db setting! Ha
Hahaaa! @jmoak311, I think the dev team will black list me if I go back and ask for a -3db setting now. I had to push hard to get the +3/+6. Please just use -6db and adjust your channel gains
