Hello everyone,
I recently started DJing as a hobby for fun and to play music at small parties with friends.
I’m running into a volume issue with my setup and was wondering if anyone here has experienced the same problem or found a solution.
-
My setup:
-
Controller: Hercules DJControl Mix Ultra (Bluetooth connection)
-
App: djay by Algoriddim (using the Spotify library)
-
Tablet: Lenovo Tab M11 (Android)
-
Speaker: JBL PartyBox Encore
-
Audio connection: tablet jack output with a split cable (master to the speaker / cue to headphones)
Since the controller is Bluetooth-only and doesn’t have a built-in sound card, the audio comes directly from the tablet. To be able to pre-listen in headphones, I’m using a split cable on the tablet’s jack output.
The problem is that the overall volume seems quite low. Even with the tablet volume at maximum, the master level in djay at full, and the speaker turned up quite high, I feel like the JBL PartyBox could go much louder but the signal coming in is limited.
When I connect the tablet directly to the speaker without the split cable, it seems like the sound is already a bit louder.
Has anyone experienced this issue with this controller or with djay on Android?
Can the split cable really cause that much loss in volume?
Thanks in advance for your feedback and experience.
Have a nice day.
Hi @LowProfile_59, welcome to the Community! Version of operating system (ex. iOS 17.3.1):
Version of djay (ex. 5.1.3):
Hardware Firmware Version (ex. 2.7):
- Is your Android device also connected to power?
- With everything connected and powered on, please share screen shots of your Main djay Settings page, djay Settings>Sound page and Settings>MIDI Devices page.
- Is the Mix Ultra Main Volume knob turned up?
- Are the channel faders for Deck 1 and Deck 2 on the Mix Ultra both set to maximum?
- Is the Mix Ultra Crossfader in the center position?
- Are your headphones connected to the green end of the splitter cable and your speaker to the black end?
Yes of course, because the split cable is taking half the signal (one channel) and feeding it to your headphones. A direct connection is feeding both channels (left and right) into the speaker.
Yes, that’s what I understood…
Do you know if any device exists which could increase the signal which goes to the speaker?
Hi again @LowProfile_59, there are inline headphone amplifiers and related products. However, please review my questions above before adding something like this to your setup.
I’ve just taken a look at the specs for the Partybox and noticed that there’s a guitar input which requires less input level than the aux input - so as your output is mono anyway, you could try connecting to the guitar input instead.

It would be really helpful to see what your Audio Output settings are. In particular your Audio Limiter and Output headroom settings.
Hello! It’s been a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!

From your points 1 to 6 , the answer is yes
Your settings look good @LowProfile_59. I can’t think of anything to suggest other than trying a different splitter cable and different audio cable.
