As title suggests, I’m moving my setup from Macbook to ipad (air, 4th gen).
I know the recommendation is to use Apple Music to manage music and playlists but that’s not an option for me because it refuses to copy over large parts of my library (all legitimately purchased I hasten to add!).
So instead I’ve copied the files manually to the ipad, I can see the folder in Djay Pro and I want to add all the music in this folder (which has a mass of sub folders) to my Collection. I can see how to add all the music files in one folder, but that would require all my music to be in one folder, instead of the hundreds of folders it’s currently organised in.
Is there a way to recursively add all the music in a folder and every sub-folder to the Collection or do I have to dump all the files in a single folder first?
Hi! I started on iPad and the files are organized in folders and sub-folders and it was easy to have them same way on the iPhone and MacBook, I just add the main folder and all sub-folders appeared there but after I started to make playlists I copied from DJAY djay/User Data/djay Media Library from iPad to iPhone and kept in mind the folder structure (in my case, the folder that contains all my music is in / ;
Once I needed to have my playlist on the MacBook and then I copied DJAY media library from iPad but the folder structure it’s not the same but DJAY recognized that and automatically scanned my hard drive for corresponding files. In this way I have my music organized by folders and also by playlist.
No, vice-versa. If you are using the same iCloud account on both devices and you have enabled DJAY for sync you will have automatically cue point and saved loops.
Hi @MrBojangles, unfortunately this possible is not at the moment.
A work around you can try at the moment is:
On your Mac, using Finder, assign a color tag to all the audio files.
Transfer the files to iOS.
Then in djay from the “Add from Files…” option, in the file picker you can search for all files with the relevant tag and you should be able to do a “Select all” on the results.
Please note however, it’s uncertain how well this will work with 1000s of tracks as the iOS file picker can be a bit delicate when dealing with lots of files.
Hi @Slak_Jaw Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve tried this but when I copy the files to the iPad (by dragging them to the DJay app in Finder) they don’t seem to retain their tags? Should I be copying them somewhere else?
Hi again @MrBojangles, our engineering team is asking if you’re able to use an external SSD drive or USB stick to copy the files? It should work using iCloud drive as well.
Hi, sorry I haven’t provided screenshots but after a bit more research I can see the issue: The files “are” tagged, but don’t show up with the red tag filter. So if you “Get More Info” from the Files app you can see the red tag is selected, but it’ll only act like it has a red tag if you then retag it. Unfortunately Files won’t let you mass tag files so this unfortunately seems like a dead end unless there’s something else I can try?
Just to note this happened with files copies from the MacBook or directly from an SSD, as you suggested.
In the meantime I’m using a different file browser app to mass copy the files into one location so I can hopefully select them all that way…
I’ve now put all files in the one folder, but when I choose select all the file picker crashes, restarts, and then I’m only allowed to select one file at a time. Apparently it can’t handle more than a certain amount of files.
I’m honestly beginning to despair, I’ve used djay professionally for years but I can’t believe how difficult it has been trying to migrate my setup to iPad, and after hours and hours of trying I’m still unable to perform the fundamental task of copying my music collection to my iPad and importing it into djay.
My last resort is to now split the collection up into 500 at a time to see if it is capable of importing that many songs.
Djay is a fantastic djaying app when your collection is loaded in but getting to that point with an iPad is incredibly frustrating, and currently seemingly impossible!
Hi @MrBojangles, I shared your feedback with the dev team and they will look into adding Folder Import support soon. Unfortunately, the iOS Files App does not work well large numbers of files, especially folders containing a large number of files. This is an iOS limitation.
