Music piracy discussion

Hello everyone. Let’s please try to keep this discussion civil and friendly otherwise I’ll be forced to simply close it. Thanks!

Here’s a friendly reminder of some of the community guidelines.

This is a Civilized Place for Public Discussion

Please treat this discussion forum with the same respect you would any shared community resource. We want this to be a place to share skills, knowledge and interests through ongoing conversation.

These are not hard and fast rules, merely guidelines to aid the human judgment of our community and keep this a clean and well-lit place for civilized public discourse.

Improve the Discussion

Help us make this a great place for discussion by always working to improve the discussion in some way, however small. If you are not sure your post adds to the conversation, think over what you want to say and try again later.

The topics discussed here matter to us, and we want you to act as if they matter to you, too. Be respectful of the topics and the people discussing them, even if you disagree with some of what is being said.

One way to improve the discussion is by discovering ones that are already happening. Spend time browsing the topics here before replying or starting your own, and you’ll have a better chance of meeting others who share your interests.

Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree

You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But remember to criticize ideas, not people. Please avoid:

  • Name-calling
  • Personal attacks
  • Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content
  • Knee-jerk contradiction

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

Always Be Civil

Nothing sabotages a healthy conversation like rudeness:

  • Be civil. Don’t post anything that a reasonable person would consider offensive, abusive, or hate speech.
  • Keep it clean. Don’t post anything obscene or sexually explicit.
  • Respect each other. Don’t harass anyone, impersonate people, or expose their private information.
  • Respect our forum. Don’t post spam or otherwise vandalize the forum.

These are not concrete terms with precise definitions — avoid even the appearance of any of these things. If you’re unsure, ask yourself how you would feel if your post was featured on the front page of the New York Times.

This is a public forum, and search engines index these discussions. Keep the language, links, and images safe for family and friends.

Has something been posted that was removed? I don’t see any bad language, name calling, personal attacks or anything offensive.

I haven’t removed anything. Just sharing a reminder to be civil. Thanks!

I didn’t intend to open this kind of debate — my apologies. I come from the music industry, so I’m very familiar with these questions.

In this context, I don’t see any other valid position than the one expressed by STU-C — music theft remains theft, without ambiguity.

That said, my situation raises a genuine point of coherence.

I own a substantial physical collection — over 500 CDs and 300 vinyl records — and I also maintain a premium Tidal subscription, including the DJ option.

When I mix via Tidal in streaming, everything is considered compliant. Yet, if I use that exact same playlist downloaded locally — solely to ensure stability and avoid any connection issues — while still paying for the same Tidal subscription, it suddenly becomes problematic.

What, fundamentally, distinguishes these two situations?
What is the conceptual or legal difference between mixing via streaming in a club with reliable Wi-Fi, and mixing the same tracks locally for technical security, under the same active subscription?

You mean recorded (ripped) from Tidal? Obviously that’s the problem part. It’s against the Tidal terms and conditions to do that.

You’re renting the music. You don’t have the right to record it (hence DJ software not permitting streamed music to be recorded).

IMO as someone who comes “from the music industry” you shouldn’t even need to ask about this!

BTW Tidal tracks can be downloaded and cached locally (offline storage) in VirtualDJ. It’s the only DJ software that can do this with Tidal AFAIK.

I think some of the mixed messaging here is down to the platform that this discussion is being held on. Even though most of the posters on this thread are not DJay Pro staff, they (myself included) still feel a duty to protect not only the Artists, but the good name of DJay Pro, as well. This is a business who can’t be associated in any way with illegal activity, however minor it may seem to some.

If we were having this discussion on R/Piracy on Reddit, you will get a completely answer to the questions raised. I still feel the legality of ripping music from another source to be illegal, no matter what country you are from, but it never gets prosecuted and hence people think it’s fair game.

…which is why I was surpised when the statement in the original post was ignored.

I would have expected some action such as removing the reference to the software used and advising the poster not to discuss such matters.

The reference was removed…

Still visible in the screenshot (first post in this thread). :slightly_smiling_face:

Fixed now. Thanks!

I have unlisted this topic, so only those who are already here can see it. This will allow everyone to continue debating, but it will no longer be publicly visible to any new users. Thanks!

There are still three links to here in the original thread
