No audio output or pre-cueing - FLX4 (Windows)

  • Device model: Windows PC
  • Version of operating system: Windows 11
  • Version of djay: 5.3.2815.0
  • Hardware/controllers used: DDJ-FLX4

Your question/suggestion/feedback:

Hey y’all! I’m having issues with audio. There is no audio whatsoever going into and coming out of my FLX-4. I tried running DJay on two other computers, one of them also running Windows 11, the other one running Windows 10, and the issue is the same, no audio. I then connected my FLX-4 to my Android device and I ran the djay pro app on my Android phone and everything works perfectly fine, main audio is good, pre-cuing works as expected, everything works on Android, no issues. But on three different Windows computers, nothing. For sanity check, I also tested a few non-djay apps on Windows and the app that has a name similar to “record” has the same issue that djay is having, but a well known open-source DJing app does not, it works fine. I also booted my PC on to Linux and tested another DJing app on it and it also works fine. I then booted back into Windows and I ran a simple audio test app to output an audio tone into my FLX-4 and I can hear the audio tone just fine. I can most definitely rule out, with 110% confidence, any hardware issues with my DDJ-FLX4. Can someone please tell me what’s going on and how I can fix it?

Update: I tried it again on Android and the same behavior as described above happens, even though it worked fine the last time I tried it on Android.

Please take a screenshot of the audio settings in DJay on one of your Windows PCs. I suspect that something is wrong here.

Hmm, that looks correct. Strange, there does seem to be a problem with the driver.

I discovered something else weird… When I have my backup controller (Hercules DJControl Mix) connected and audio output set to my PC’s internal sound card and the pre-cueing to my external sound card, djay pro works fine, but the moment I swapped back to the FLX-4, and then I set my audio outputs back to the internal and external sound cards for testing purposes, it doesn’t want to output audio to those either, yet I can still send audio test tones to the FLX-4 and the internal and external sound cards using a tone generating app and that works fine. When I disconnect the FLX-4 and reconnect the backup controller, djay pro outputs audio again like normal. This is strange behavior. It makes me wonder if I really do have a hardware issue with the FLX-4…

That’s strange and not normal. I think algoriddim will have to help, as I can’t recreate this.
@Slak_Jaw ,you’ll have to take over.

Hi @KimberlyMcBlaze, welcome to the Community! Sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue.

  1. Please start by downloading and installing the latest firmware from Pioneer DJ: Download firmware or software for DDJ-FLX4 - Pioneer DJ - Global
  2. Next, make sure the FLX4 is also connected to power and not running off of USB bus power from your laptop.
  3. Disable Bluetooth on your PC.
  4. Finally, I would try using a different USB cable between your FLX4 and your laptop and also try a different USB port on your laptop. Do not connect through a USB Hub or and USB connector adapters.

I downloaded the latest firmware & installed it.

I connected external power to the FLX4 and I used a different USB cable and USB port.

I turned off Bluetooth.

Result: no change.

Thanks for the follow up @KimberlyMcBlaze. Perhaps it’s an issue with your FLX4 audio driver or the hardware itself then. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the FLX4 driver.

Here’s the thing… I tried it on multiple computers, including computers with fresh install of Windows, and that didn’t resolve anything. And now it’s also misbehaving on Android when previously, it wasn’t. I was confident it wasn’t a hardware issue, but now I think I do have a hardware issue. I am at a complete loss. I think I’ll just have my FLX-4 RMA’d as it’s still under warranty.

Yeah it seems like a hardware issue is likely. Please report back when you get your replacement unit. Thanks!
