I’m running DeeJay on a 2024 iPad Pro 13" M4. I have the iPad connected via USB-C to an external dock, which connects my iPad to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, ethernet and speakers.
When I select the “USB audio CODEC” output on my iPad when watching a YouTube video (swipe down top right, press audio symbol, select “USB audio CODEC”) it works and the sound comes out my external speakers.
When I am running DeeJay and under the DeeJay audio devices settings select “USB audio CODEC” as the main output, I hear no sound. I notice that when swiping down on the top right of the iPad, the USB audio CODEC still appears but I cannot select it (maybe because DeeJay has locked it down)?
Any help appreciated! Latest iPad OS, version 5.3.3 of DeeJay.
Hi @Dan_Hackley, welcome to the Community!
- Is your external dock also connect to power and is your iPad charging normally when connected to the dock?
- I’m assuming your dock has a headphone jack and you are connecting your speakers to it? Can you please share some photos showing how everything is connected?
- Can you please share screenshots of your djay Settings>Audio Devices and the “swipe down top right” menu?
- A short video of your workflow/process might also be helpful.
Thanks!
Check that the USB audio device is connected selected as default and not muted. Try replugging or restarting.
Thanks @Slak_Jaw - to answer your questions:
My external dock is connected to power, and my iPad charges normally when connected to it.
My dock has a headphone jack, and the speakers are indeed connected to that.
I’ve attached 3 screenshots; the djay Settings>Audio Devices, the “swipe down top right” menu, and that menu after I press the audio selector.
I tested a few other apps on the iPad (e.g. Jambl), and they all play audio via the USB audio CODEC as default, when the iPad is connected to the dock.
Let me know if you need any further info.
@Jack_Qasim - where do I check this? I don’t see any mute function in djay for an audio device. If I select “output to iPad speaker” in the djay settings, the sound comes from my iPad without issue.
Thanks for the additional info @Dan_Hackley. Please try the following:
- Disconnect your dock from you iPad and the speakers from the dock.
- Close djay and all other apps on your device.
- Follow the procedure linked below to perform a Forced Restart of your iOS device:
a. iPhone: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support (IE)
b. iPad: Force restart iPad - Apple Support (IE)
- After rebooting, do not connect anything to you iPad or Dock yet.
- Turn Bluetooth OFF on your device
- Launch djay
- Make sure your dock is connected to power.
- Connect the dock to your iPad and confirm that your iPad starts charging
- Connect your speakers to the Dock
- Confirm that the USB audio CODEC shows up in the Main Output in the djay Audio Devices settings.
- Load a song onto a deck and start playing it.
- Check the “swipe down menu” and make sure the USB audio CODEC device is selected.
Hi @Slak_Jaw,
Many thanks for the further help. I followed your steps down to step 11 - when I check the “main output”, it is set to “speaker”. The “USB audio CODEC” output has disappeared from the list. However, if I then unplug the iPad from the dock, and plug it in again, the sound starts playing via the USB DAC as it should! In the djay audio devices settings, USB audio CODEC is selected as the main output. When I top-right swipe down, USB audio CODEC is selected there also.
I’m not sure which of these steps fixed the issue, but at least it works! I wonder if it was simply unplugging the iPad from the dock and plugging it in again. Any thoughts appreciated!
Perfect! Yeah, certain audio devices don’t always behave as expected. Usually, an unplug/replug once djay is running will solve the connection issue. If not, then the Forced Restart and replug usually does the trick. Glad that worked though.
One final question - does the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 MK1 work as a controller? Only the MK3 is on your list, but when I plug the Traktor in to my dock it does appear in the audio devices settings - but I can’t seem to get it to control the app.
Hi @Dan_Hackley the MK1 and MK2 versions are not supported.
OK, thanks for the confirmation.
No problem. You’re welcome @Dan_Hackley. I don’t have access to this legacy hardware to confirm, but if you might be able to switch it into MIDI mode and then MIDI map it yourself using the MIDI Learn tool in djay.
OK, I’ll take a look at my options including upgrading from MK1 to MK3. Thanks again!
