Pioneer DDJ-Rev 1 pitch slider is stuck in normal mode even after switching the 'invert slider' button on.

  • Device model (e.g. 2020 iPad Air 4th Gen): Apple M2 Pro, 16 inch 2023.
  • Version of operating system (e.g. macOS 14.4.1): Mac OS Ventura 13.6.7
  • Version of djay (e.g. 5.1.2): 5.2.7
  • Hardware/controllers used (e.g. Reloop Mixon 8 Pro): Pioneer DDJ-REV 1

Summary of the issue:
When moving the pitch slider on the Rev 1 towards the SLOW pitch, the software moves its pitch slider towards the FAST pitch. And vice versa.

After switching the ‘invert slider’ button on, in Djay Pro (this normally fixes the problem) the exact same relative Rev 1 pitch movement to DJays pitch moment occurs. This does not fix or reverse the relative motion.

How to reproduce the issue:

Here is a video of what I mean.

What I am going for here is the get the same movement to speed as the DDJ-400 or the Pioneer DDJ Rev 7

Hi @DJRedwood, please try going to the djay Settings>General>TEMPO and select the Invert Slider from this menu instead. Then close djay, disconnect your hardware, reboot your laptop, connect your controller, launch djay and retest. Thanks.

Hi Thanks for the advise but unfortunately it don’t change anything. I tried it twice.

The ‘invert slider’ function absolutely does change the operation of slower tempo in one direction to faster in that same direction, so the functionality is working fine, however the movement of the pitch slider on the Rev 1 vs the movement of the pitch slider on DJ is still stuck in opposite and that’s problem I’m trying to fix here.

Towards the LEFT on the Rev 1 should be UP on Djay. Like the rev 7 which is a direct representation of a turn table tuned 90 degrees anti-clockwise to battle mode.

The current movement is LEFT on Rev 1 is DOWN on Djay. Thus is wrong.

Okay, I re-watched your video several times, and it appears to me at the end when you have Invert Slider turned OFF that it is working as expected. Moving the Pitch Fader on your hardware to the Left (minus direction as indicated on your hardware) is reducing the BPM in djay. Please note that Invert Slider does not make the onscreen fader move in the opposite direction. It just swaps the + and - BPM directions. Your BPM is decreasing as expected when moving the hardware control to the Left with Invert Slider turned OFF.

I think the reason this doesn’t seem correct is because of the sideways orientation of the REV1 Pitch Faders vs the vertical orientation in djay. This does appear to be behaving normally and as expected though. I hope that helps.

Hello! It’s been a week since my last reply. I’m going to consider this topic completed for now so I can focus on others. However, please feel free to respond and we can definitely revisit this. Thanks!

Hi Slack_Jaw, apologies it’s silly season and the gigs have been hectic. So the direction of the slider relative to the speed of the song is absolutely not a problem as the ‘invert slider’ button solves this 100%. So let’s ignore that.

The thing I’m trying to solve here is the direction of the Rev 1 pitch slider relative to Djay Pro pitch slider.

The direction of the rev 1 pitch slider is opposite to that of DJays pitch slider. This doesn’t reverse with the ‘invert slider’ button. And this is my problem.

The current behaviour is not normal. The concept of turning a traditional turntable 90 degrees counter clockwise is how the pitch slider ends up on the top running left to right.

So, if on a turntable in traditional mode or CDJ, you move the pitch slider physically UP (we are ignoring the song speed). Then if you rotate the turn-table 90 degrees counter clockwise to battle mode, that previous up movement of the pitch slider is now left. So Left + UP (again we are not talking speed of the song but of the physical slider it’s self). This is standard.

My problem is this movement is opposite for me with Rev 1 and DJ Pro.e.i Left on the Rev 1 is down on DJ Pro. It would be great to have an extra button or option in addition to ‘invert slider’ which inverts the MOTION of the virtual pitch slider relative the controller pitch slider. 30 years on turntables this concept is ingrained in my head so the current motion really messes me up during gigs and I would love to solve this. The current ‘invert slider’ button should be called ‘invert pitch’ and a new button should be introduced called ‘invert slider’ which should give me option to reverse the MOVEMENT.

Hi @DJRedwood, I hear what you are saying and I have shared this with the dev team. In the meantime, does it help if you change the djay UI to Hardware Mode and turn off the onscreen Pitch Faders (see below)?

Hi again @DJRedwood, one more thing you could try is to edit the built-in MIDI mapping for the REV1 Tempo Faders. If you’re unfamiliar with MIDI mapping on macOS, please refer to the FAQ below.

  1. Basically, you just need to move the Deck 1 Tempo Fader while in the MIDI Learn Tool then,
  2. Expand the Advance Control Configuration section then,
  3. Select Invert then,
  4. Save the new MIDI mapping.
  5. If that works, then repeat steps 1-3 for the Deck 2 Tempo Fader.

Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like on iOS, but things should be pretty similar on macOS.
