It is amazing that Spotify is finally back in Djay after all these years. However, things have changed a bit in Spotify land (and the other big streaming platforms as well).
Nowadays artists use it more like a promotion platform and publish those pesky short radio edits to force listeners to buy the tracks. So if the streaming services don’t combat this trend with a pro plan for example, that gives artist the incentive back to publish the complete extended versions, there is less and less use for electronic music DJs.
The only way to cover all the needs (full tracks, stems) right now is to have an additional 30 € beatport pro subscription. How are you handling this and what do you see happening in the future?
For the majority of users of services such as Spotify, the short radio edits are perfectly fine. DJs and fans of club mixes probably only make up a small proportion of the total.
Apart from that, I keep wondering when someone first dared to call a track that was just over three minutes long an “extended version.”
No one knows exactly how this will develop in the future, but providers who really want to appeal to DJs will have to start including more extended mixes in their catalogs. Spotify is already better positioned in this regard than Tidal, for example, but of course still a long way behind providers such as Beatport. However, Beatport’s catalog is geared exclusively toward the electronic genre.
I find it problematic when providers like Tidal offer a separate rate just for the possibility of using it with DJ software, but then don’t really cater to the needs of DJs (especially extended mixes) in return.
The market will evolve, and streaming will become increasingly important for DJs, even those who still reject it.
I use Beatsource Pro as get the Exclusives, Edits, Remixes, DJ City and DMS catalogues with off line locker. I use Spotify generally for requests where I can quickly add to queue. Works pretty well for me. Beatport and Beatsource have pretty much blended their catalogues now but I prefer Beatsource as has all the exclusives and remixes etc.
