RANE Four Audio Device Setup?

Hey all,

First post here, and couldn’t quite find the answer before asking here.

Just bought a new Rane Four based on it’s compatibility with Djay Pro according to the website. I bought the Rane Four exclusively so I could switch to DJay Pro from Virtual DJ and start messing with stems, etc.

I am having all manner of issues getting the Rane Four to work with Djay Pro. Specifically, I have setup Djay Pro to “External Mixer” with Deck 1 assigned to Channel 1-2 on the Rane and Deck 2 assigned to channels 3-4. The reason I’m doing that is because if I set both Deck 1 and Deck 2 to Channel 1-2 in the software, the upfader from channel 1 turns up the volume of Deck 2.

If I set the software to “Internal” mixer it “defaults” to Channel 1-2 for Deck 1 and Deck 2 and I have the same problem. There is no option in “Internal” mode to change how the decks are routed discretely, so I’m always getting both decks when they’re both playing and their “tied” to one fader.

So, this has been my workaround, and it does give me the ability to turn up Deck 1 (Channel 1) and Deck 2 (Channel 2) discretely without one stepping on top of the other. I can’t imagine that’s the way it’s supposed to work, because when I open Serato with this same deck everything does exactly what I’d expect (I do realize the Rane Four is, first and foremost, a Serato deck).

Given the way I’ve had to configure this, I cannot for the life of me get the pre-cue buttons to work. When I hit the pre-cue buttons, I can’t hear anything in my headphones until I turn up the fader on the channel I’m trying to listen to, which of course defeats the purpose of headphone cueing in the first place. I’ve tried setting the Pre-Cueing to Channel 5-6, but it doesn’t seem the Rane Four has enough channels as a sound card to handle that since I’m already using 4 channels just to get the upfaders to work correctly.

Has anyone successfully configured the Rane Four on a Macbook Pro with discreet headphone cueing and upfaders that don’t turn up 2 decks at the same time?

Macbook Pro (Intel), Sequoia 15.6.1, the newest version of Djay Pro, and updated firmware on the Rane Four.

Thanks in advance. I feel bad keeping this deck if I can’t get it to work with Djay Pro, which is the sole reason I bought it. Thanks in advance!

Hi @djgsauce, welcome to the Community! Sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue. Please note that the RANE Four must be used in External Mixer Mode only. With your hardware connected to your Mac, please navigate to the djay Settings>Devices and select the drop down menu near the bottom left and choose Reset to Defaults. This should setup your RANE Four with the correct audio configuration. There should be no need to adjust anything after doing this. I hope that helps!

That seems to have done the trick, even though clicking on that button didn’t change any of the settings I already have in there…strange?

Perfect! Glad that solved it for you @djgsauce

Hi! I also helped a friend set up this controller, and it worked really weirdly! I have a question regarding the “Reset to Defaults” option for RANE Four in djay Pro.I noticed that after using Reset to Defaults, routing and channel-related issues were resolved, even though none of the visible settings appeared to change.Could you explain what exactly Reset to Defaults resets internally? Does it only restore visible device settings, or does it also rebuild audio routing, mixer configuration, HID/MIDI assignments, or other hidden device-specific parameters?

I’m trying to better understand what was actually corrected by the reset.

p.s. I used flx 4 before, if this could be related?!

We’re going to try running a stability test, after reset!

Thank you!

Hi @Polyura, it only resets what is visible in the Device Settings. It’s possible that the FLX4 was interfering some how, but I doubt it. Could have been something else in the audio settings. Hard to say what the specific issue was without seeing the before and after settings. When in doubt, I simply run the Rest to Defaults when I’m experiencing any audio issues. Usually solves things.

Looking forward to hearing the results of your stability tests.

I was informed about the controller! My friend’s master cue stopped working, I tried to help her configure it remotely, and also reset the settings again. But it doesn’t work! And it still behaves strangely (we tried different A/B usb channels, reset settings (the only thing we still want to try is reinstalling the program. p.s macbook 2024/rane four last firmware 1.18.0.18

This is what the settings look like. This is after resetting the settings.Does it look right?

Hi @Polyura, thanks for the additional info. I don’t have this hardware to check for myself, but it seems like the Pre-Cueing should be set to RANE Four not None.

Okay, so which channel should I choose?

I’m not sure. I don’t have this hardware to test. Start with a channel that is not yet being used.

Hi again @Polyura, I checked with our hardware engineer and the Pre-Cueing for the RANE Four is handled internally. So having it set to None is correct. They tested it and Pre-Cueing works as expected. This leads me to think that the issue is either a hardware problem or a USB cable problem.

I recommend you try a high-quality DJ specific USB cable like the Chroma Cables from DJ TechTools. Connect directly to the computer without any hubs or adapters. Also, try a different USB port of the computer. If this doesn’t solve it, most likely there’s an issue with the hardware itself.

A friend sent me a photo of the connection)It would be interesting if the problem really was with the cable—I just didn’t notice it, and thought it was a direct connection!

I am almost certain that is the issue. The adapter most likely and possibly that cable as well. The adapters are notoriously cheap and unreliable. I’ve seen so many issues that were caused by these. I recommend they get one of these cables if their laptop has USB-C sockets.

Hi! I bought this cable and also reset the software… but the headphones still aren’t working (I plan to suggest that a friend try using the 1/4" headphone jack and also test it with Serato). I’ll be having a video call with him in a few days. Do you have any other ideas on how to figure out what’s causing this?

Yes, I agree. Try the 1/4” headphone jack and a different DJ software if possible. This will help to determine if it’s a hardware problem or not.
