Recording Input not showing Motu UltraLite input channels

I can’t record audio in djay 5.2.7 (iPad Pro). Somehow the Recording Input menu is not showing the input channels of my Motu (it says: NONE), while the Pre-cueing, Sampler and Looper menu’s do show the input channels.

I’m in Eternal mixing mode and Hardware mode. The connections from my mixer output is 100% ok since I can record in other apps.

I’m using a Motu UltraLite Mk5. I have tried several sample frequencies (44.1, 48, 192 kHz) and have set the record file format to WAV. Rebooted both sound card and iPad several times.

Hi @dibb, I suspect that you will need to connect your Motu UltraLite to a computer and configure “Recording Input” in the audio setup in order to record, which requires the device to support “REC OUT”. Much like recording with an external mixer. With this set up, djay will record the audio signal coming back from the mixer/controller/audio interface. I’m not 100% sure if this will work with iOS though since the configuration requires a computer first. Please give that a try and let me know. Thanks!

Hi @Slak_Jaw,
Thanks for your message.
The Motu UltraLite MK5 is 100% usb class compliant, there is no need for configuration outside the app, in this case djay.
As I wrote in my first message, djay actually sees all the audio inputs of the Motu. They are displayed when selecting Pre-cueing, Sampler and Looper menu’s. Only when selecting Recording Input in djay, they are not shown.
So iOS sees my inputs, djay sees my inputs, but when choosing Recording Inputs in djay, no inputs are shown.

Okay, thanks for confirming @dibb. I don’t have access to that specific hardware, so I can’t think of anything else to try other than switching djay to Internal Mixer Mode and testing that configuration.
In the meantime, I have passed this onto the engineering team for further review after the holidays to see if they have any suggestions for you. Thanks!

Thanks for your time.
Recording in internal mode obviously does work, but that’s not an option for me.
I was now able to select the correct input channels in the settings, but when recording, I end up with an empty file.

I will just AUM to record my sets. In case your dev team wants to fix any potential issue with external recording with a Motu interface, I’m happy to help debug.

You’re welcome @dibb. Happy to help! I’ll let them know…

Hi @dibb, I spoke with engineering. Pre-cueing, Sampler, and Looper are outputs . It sounds like iOS is not recognizing the input channels of the audio interface. You could try with another app like Garageband to see if that shows them the input channels from the interface.

Hi @Slak_Jaw, thanks for the heads up and for checking.
I now see I had selected the output channels of my Motu (I thought the recording input setting menu would filter only to show inputs), which explains it didn’t record anything.

But the problem remains: djay is not seeing my input channels, while any other apps on iOS do see them. I can record through my Motu in Garageband and AUM without any problem.

Hi @dibb, can you please confirm what iPadOS version you are running?

I’m running 18.2 on a 3rd gen ipad pro.

Thanks @dibb. Please try updating to the latest iOS 18.2.1 and let me know if the issue persists. Thanks!

I’ve upgraded to 18.2.1 but the problem remains. No input channels shown.

Okay, thanks for confirming. I’ll pass this onto engineering to see if they have any suggestions.

For their information: I’ve set the recording format in djay to WAV. Permission for djay to use Mic are granted in iOS.

My Motu defaults to a sampling rate of 192 kHz which might not be supported by djay’s recording feature, but when I switch to 44.1 (or 48) kHz it still doesn’t see my Motu’s inputs.

And again, other apps do see my Motu’s inputs perfectly fine, which leads me to think it’s a problem at djay’s end.

Anyway, thanks for your time. Meanwhile I will use AUM to record from my mixer.

You’re welcome @dibb. Thanks for the additional info. I’ll pass it onto engineering.
