Saving the Neural Mix Waveform as a permanent setting
You probably know that djay offers the option to display separate stems in the main waveform, called the Neural Waveform?
I’m guessing many users have seen this waveform already but, just like me, sometimes forget to select it at crucial moments when they want to use it! This can happen because the choice of waveform is not persistent—the default reverts back to the ‘normal’ waveform after a restart, so you have to select it every time you start Algoriddim djay.
However, in my opinion, the choice of Neural Mix waveform is likely a permanent preference for most users rather than something changed from session to session.
Therefore, it makes perfect sense to treat the waveform selection as a persistent setting, just like many other settings that are stored automatically across sessions for the same logical and user-friendly reasons. For example:
Effect choices and parameters
Looper settings
Preferred deck layout
2- or 4-deck selection
Samples
EQ knobs including Neural/EQ setting
Zoom and contrast levels
Just like these settings that users are already accustomed to, it would make great sense to treat the Neural Waveform setting the same way → Just remember and restore the last used setting. This would greatly improve usability and consistency.
Reason for current behaviour?!
I understand that in some cases djay is not allowed to split tracks into stems and cannot show separate waveforms (due to policies of Apple Music and Tidal streaming). However, this should not be a reason to avoid saving the Neural Mix waveform choice permanently in other cases. A smart program could handle this gracefully—e.g., automatically revert to the simple waveform when necessary and switch back to Neural Waveform when possible.
I strongly encourage Algoriddim to make this enhancement to streamline the user experience and maintain workflow continuity so that more djay eventually will use that great Neural Waveform!!
==> Please vote in the upper-left vote box if you agree and want this setting to be saved permanently—just like many other settings.
And now with version 5.4.3, with Spotify integrated, this becomes even more important because users will switch back and forth between their own tracks and streaming Spotify tracks.
This causes issues with 2, 3, or 4-stem Neural Waveform, as it always reverts to a single waveform. After that it stays to one waveform even when switching back to local tracks, which is very inconvenient.
I also noticed that the manual part of a selected effect (when assigned to a stem) reverts back to a general effect (applied to the whole track) whenever a Spotify track is played in between. And it stays there also.
In practice, what does the 1-stem waveform option do??
I have found it to do nothing other than revert the 2-3or4 view back to normal.
I made a suggestion that it should be turned to be the on/off trigger button to force djay to “analyse stems on song load” but o think i didn’t explain it well.
Right now, the 2, 3 or 4 view option actually causes analysis to happen, whereas the 1- view option doesn’t.
To me it’s a redundant button.
Hi @Armigo, the 1 NM Waveform option allows you to see the Instrumental and Acapella NM buttons next to the waveform, while only showing a single waveform to simplify the UI.
