Switching back to Serato?

  1. Hello team Djay, I have been using the app on DVS for a few years now and I don’t know if I will in the future.

Lastly I have been mixing on Serato again and noticed some issues with Djay that I didn’t want to look at for a long time.

Mixing on DVS with Djay is harder in my opinion, adjusting the platter for slowing or speeding up the song don’t feel natural like on real vinyl, and I don’t have this problem with Serato ( or VDJ or Traktor).

It is really a thing as I have tried with conviction to preach Djay to my Serato friends, I was the weird « Djay guy » when everybody was on Serato but all of them had trouble with the bpm accuracy or pitch control and mixing on Djay was harder for all of them..

I asked on the forum few years ago about the pitch problem on DVS, small adjustments are not detect by the app and the bpm doesn’t change (example for a +/- 0,1 or 0,2)

Only when the bpm change for 0,3 or 0,4 I can see something happening on the screen but then again it takes few seconds or more, it is not instantaneous …

I saw a topic on it and apparently the engineering team made this to « stabilize » the bpm value on the screen, but now we have a digital vinyl system that doesn’t emulate a real vinyl feel… strange

It’s not about the gear, Technics, Stanton or Reloop turntable and it’s all the same.. Pionneer s9 or Rane 70 same.. MacBook with a M3 pro chip and latest update so nothing to worry about on that side.

The bpm and pitch detection are voluntary modified by the engineering team so there is nothing I can do.. I have tried every possible settings over the years

Why anybody want a digitally modified/stabilised bpm other than the natural thing? The software should just give us real time information on the bpm and the pitch should affect immediately the bpm when it’s moving so that we can make really small adjustments. We want that natural wow and flutter

« Stabilized » bpm is ok on controller but with DVS a realistic feel is better imo

I don’t know if team Algoriddim have DVS user in mind because a lot of us have asked about this and still nothing (same for scratch tool mapping…).

Technical futuristic stuff are great, Meta Quest, Crossfader FX etc but who is really using this ?! For the basics like BPM detection, pitch accuracy or scratch bank we are still waiting…

I really want to use Djay as my primarily app but I will let the competition another shot now, and with that Lucid beat grid coming on Serato, I don’t know if Djay is the Serato killer anymore …

Sorry if my English is not perfect

They’re both good softwares with strong points and weaknesses, why not enjoy the advantages of both? No one has to get killed.

Do you mean the BPM that is displayed, or the actually playback pitch/BPM?

I can image due to the flexible beatgrids in DJay Pro that the playback speed is filtering out “wow&flutter” and tiny/fast pitch fluctuations?

Did you try to disable “cue anti-drift” and/or reduce audio buffer size in the DVS settings?

I meant the BPM that is displayed.

I tried with different buffer Size and anti drift or not (with others parameters too) but something in the software is filtering tiny pitch adjustments so we can have a stable BPM displayed on screen. As a result we can’t make small adjustments and when the software detect a change in pitch position it’s not instantly displayed on screen.

It’s not a problem of a dead zone around zero either because it happens anywhere on the pitch position.

It’s the philosophy of the Algoriddim team, but I think ultimately it don’t help the DVS users. And it’s not something complicated as it was simple and straight forward in that area for other software way before Djay launch their DVS.

If only we could have the same approach to DVS as Serato or Traktor (and a mapping for scratch tool) it will be amazing…

Thanks for the detailed feedback @daveduke. I’ve shared this with our dev team.

Ok, I want to understand this. The fact that the BPM displayed is “rounded” doesn’t mean that you cannot make tiny adjustments right? It’s just a visual representation, not the playback engine?

There’s a definite delay in the reaction of Djay compared to Serato, with Serato any platter nudges or pitch adjustments are registered instantly, like you’re playing real vinyl. You can hear it and see it on screen with the bpm counter.

No other software can do it, it’s a noticeable delay.

I’m very adept at manual beat matching, yet I find it’s nowhere near as tight when blending music on Djay, Serato is top notch.

Did you try to tweak the DVS settings? I believe you can adjust responsiveness etc

Are you able to make it recognise wow and flutter? Is that the anti drift setting you refer to above? I’ll certainly disable that and give it another go.

There was a setting in Serato that you could ‘stabilise’ the BPM, but I found it awful to use in practise. I believe Djay does something similar?

There is a delay when moving the pitch slider before hearing or seeing the result of that, so it’s hard for tiny adjustments and sometimes it’s not even registered… When I try to set the bpm of a song with the pitch slider the displayed bpm is not following smoothly.

Sometimes it takes seconds to display the correct bpm, and when small adjustments are made after that you have to wait a few extra seconds till it’s registered in the software.

It’s really something coming from the Djay dev team, you don’t see it on serato or VDJ.

So DVS is not as smooth and fun as on other software because of this, you always have to check your bpm and wait for a clean beatmatching, only on DVS

I’ve had a mix today and noticed the wow and flutter doesn’t register and there’s no way to set it to do that. That does concern me a bit as the BPM can fluctuate up to 1/2 a BPM and back each rotation, making me wonder why the screen isnt reflecting it.

I tried everything as I’m using the software for the last 3 years but it improved a bit compared to 3 years ago.

But it’s not a matter of settings as it was mentioned by @Slak_Jaw in another topic that the bpm number is stabilized by the software, nothing we can really do…
