Tempo Offset Accumulation Toggling THRU/Wireless (Phase HID)

Device model (e.g. 2020 iPad Air 4th Gen): MacBook Pro 14-inch, 2021 (Apple M1 Pro)

  • Hardware/controllers used (e.g. Reloop Mixon 8 Pro): Numark Scratch + Phase (HID)
  • Hardware firmware version (e.g. 1.0.1): Unsure

A) SUMMARY OF ISSUE:

  • When I’m using Phase and I switch between Thru and WIR, I get a weird issue of the pitch lowering.

  • If I switch tracks, and back to the original track, the pitch resets.

B) DETAILED STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Load HID Phase in WIR mode

  2. Play track

  3. Switch to THRU

  4. Switch to WIR

  5. Notice the pitch sometimes goes lower by 0.1% at a time.

  6. Repeat

C) EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • The pitch not to drift.


Additional notes:
This does it via midi and also changing using mouse. Like I said above, if I change tracks the pitch zeros back out. Very odd.

Hi @andybarnes, thanks for the detailed steps, setup info and the video — this is super helpful.

This doesn’t look like expected behaviour. Toggling a deck between THRU and WIR shouldn’t nudge the tempo at all. The details that it happens via both MIDI and mouse, and that reloading the track resets the pitch, are also helpful.

A few of questions below would help narrow down what’s triggering it:

  1. Have you tried updating the Numark Scratch Firmware and Phase firmware from their respective websites?

  2. At the moment you switch back to WIR, is the remote/platter spinning, or stopped?

  3. Does the displayed BPM drop while the onscreen tempo fader stays put at 0%, or does the fader move too?

  4. Is SYNC engaged on that deck when it happens?

  5. Does it only ever drift down, or can it go up depending on platter speed at the switch?

  1. Have you tried updating the Numark Scratch Firmware and Phase firmware from their respective websites?

    1. Phase is up to date, and for the life of me I can’t see any firmware updates for the scratch.
  2. At the moment you switch back to WIR, is the remote/platter spinning, or stopped?

    1. The platter is always spinning, locked at 0 (although there will always be flutter and wow)
  3. Does the displayed BPM drop while the onscreen tempo fader stays put at 0%, or does the fader move too?

    1. The fader moves too. You can see in the video that the green dot on the pitch fader goes when I switch to THRU and doesn’t come back when I go back to WIR. And I can see it’s visually moved lower or higher.
  4. Is SYNC engaged on that deck when it happens?

    1. No sync engaged.
  5. Does it only ever drift down, or can it go up depending on platter speed at the switch?

    1. Funnily enough, I only spotted this the other day with it going down. But tested again this morning and it’s going up. In a short space of time, I managed to get it to +1%.

  1. Short screen recording showing the deck’s tempo/pitch display while toggling THRU → WIR → THRU, so the per-toggle drift is visible on screen.

  3. Screenshot of djay Audio settings and the Phase/deck mode configuration.

Hope this is what you were after. I wasn’t totally sure on Audio / Phase settings.

Worth noting, that this really doesn’t affect me much, as I’ll generally only be making the switch once.


Totally off topic, and let me know if I should raise a new post. Any advice on how to improve my waveforms? They are stuttery and if the BPMs are the same (as in these two tracks), I’d sort of expect them to be the same scale? They only seem to meet on the marker.

Hi again @andybarnes, in the meantime, if you have time, here are a few follow up items that will likely help engineering troubleshoot this further:

  1. Does the issue reproduce with Enable Digital Vinyl Control unticked, running Phase HID alone? DVS timecode inputs are currently assigned to the Numark Scratch on both decks at the same time as Phase HID is in use, so both control paths are configured simultaneously.
  2. Does it reproduce with the platter brought to a complete stop before the toggle, versus spinning?
  3. Does it reproduce with the Numark Scratch disconnected entirely, on built-in audio output?
  4. Is the trigger specific to the THRU ↔ Wireless pair, or does it also occur on Internal ↔ Wireless, Relative ↔ Wireless, and Internal ↔ THRU? This would establish whether exiting THRU or entering Wireless is the common factor.
  5. Was the issue present on earlier djay versions (5.6.6, 5.6.5)?
  6. Are you using the (built-in) Numark Scratch mapping or a custom MIDI mapping?
  7. Does it affect Deck 2 as well as Deck 1?
  8. Does behaviour change with Always apply anti-drift when jumping to cue point disabled?
  9. Does it occur with a single Phase remote as well as two?

    1. If it’s unchecked, I don’t get the THRU option (I use Thru as opposed to just Phono as it gives me software effects, helps with levels and I can record).

    1. Yes does it when platter is stopped as well.
  3. Does it reproduce with the Numark Scratch disconnected entirely, on built-in audio output?

    1. Only get INT and WIR in this mode, so it’s a non issue.
  4. Is the trigger specific to the THRU ↔ Wireless pair, or does it also occur on Internal ↔ Wireless, Relative ↔ Wireless, and Internal ↔ THRU? This would establish whether exiting THRU or entering Wireless is the common factor.

    1. I can’t seem to replicate with any other setting, only THRU. In fact toggling INT and back to WIR actually resets the BPM once it’s drifted from THRU toggling.
  5. Was the issue present on earlier djay versions (5.6.6, 5.6.5)?

    1. Custom. But tried on built in too and it’s doing it.
  7. Does it affect Deck 2 as well as Deck 1?

    1. Deck 2 is the one I’ve been testing on. Deck 1 I noticed something new, as the platter wasn’t zero’d - so it actually amplified the issue seemingly by the percentage difference. So if the original difference is 2%, the first toggle will go to 4% then, 6% etc. Video is easier to explain!
  8. Does behaviour change with Always apply anti-drift when jumping to cue point disabled?

    1. It does.
  9. Does it occur with a single Phase remote as well as two?

    1. It does.

Hi @andybarnes, outstanding testing! The Deck 1 video is very helpful. Thank you!

Your platter is sitting at −2%, and each THRU → WIR toggle adds another −2%: −2.0 → −4.1 → −6.1 → −8.1 → −10.1 → −12.0. So it isn’t drifting randomly — it seems to be re-applying your platter’s pitch offset every time you come back to WIR.

That likely also means my earlier theory was wrong. I’d suspected djay was sampling the platter’s live speed and picking up wow & flutter; your stopped-platter test rules that out, and those clean −2% steps confirm it. What it looks like instead is that on returning to WIR, djay adds the platter’s pitch offset to the tempo rather than setting the tempo to it — so it stacks with each switch.

Two genuinely useful things fell out of your testing:

  1. INT → WIR resets it — much quicker mid-set than reloading the track.

  2. Zeroing the platter’s pitch fader keeps each toggle down to ~0.1% rather than 2%.

Your custom mapping is also in the clear, since the built-in one does it too. I’m updating the report with this now — the Deck 1 video makes it far more actionable.

I just want to clarify your answer to Question #8 above. With “Always apply anti-drift when jumping to cue point” set to OFF, does the drift still happen, or does it stop?

So on number 8… it is buggy regardless of that setting. :slightly_smiling_face:
