Triggering samples to play ongoing

  • Device model: iPhone 13
  • Version of operating system: 18.1.1
  • Version of djay: 5.2.5 (Pro)
  • Hardware/controllers used: Numark DJ2Go2 Touch

I want to use DJay and my Numark controller in a live setting for a noise project.

The plan is to use the two turntables to play ambient-esque backing tracks, then use my own samples / beats over the top. I’m also using other instruments, effects, synths and loop pedals. I want to use the Numark controller to trigger everything live using my phone as the source.

Unfortunately DJay doesn’t allow user loops to be uploaded, but samples can be. What I want to know is there a way I can trigger a sample for it to play continually by hitting the pad once, then stop it by tapping the same pad? I know the record function in samples allow you to record in real time triggering samples, but I’d like to be able to drop samples in and out.

At the moment the only way I can figure a way to do this is to:

A) Create samples or beats that are long (so not a single beat, but a whole song length)
B) Map the MIDI on the Numark controller so one pad starts the sample and another stops it.

Any other suggestions?

Note: The Numark controller has 8 pads that can be mapped.

Hi @Velodrone, thanks for the details about your setup and what you are trying to achieve. Currently, djay does not support looped Samples. Also, the Looper currently does not support custom loops. Both of these have been suggested before in other topics.

A potential workaround would be to switch to 4 Deck Mode and then load your samples as songs onto each of the 4 decks. From here, you can loop your samples as needed and start and stop them using the Play/Pause buttons. If you prefer, you could also MIDI the Play/Pause for each of the 4 decks to free performance pads on your controller. Combined with some of the stock loops in the Looper, and 1 shot Samples, this should give you a fair amount of flexibility. I hope that helps.

Use decks 3 and 4 as loop decks. You can midi map the functions on your deck or use your phone to set the loops. You can do whatever you want with the tracks on 3&4 as they are on a channel just like 1&2. Great workaround for me so far. Using the iPad has been great. Probably would be much easier with a 4 deck controller though.
